At Yeronga State High School, education goes beyond the classroom—it’s about celebrating culture, diversity, and the unique stories that shape our world. Recently, the school launched Global Flavours - Taste of Harmony, a cookbook crafted by a handful of students and staff, including a heartfelt contribution from Indian teacher Sabina. Sabina shared a cherished recipe with a rich cultural backstory: her mother-in-law Ammi’s Chicken Masala. In her bustling household in Mumbai, the air was always filled with the fragrant aroma of spices – especially when Ammi was in the kitchen. Sabina fondly recalls watching in awe as Ammi effortlessly turned simple ingredients into a delicious masterpiece that filled their home with warmth and love. Ammi’s secret? Fresh handpicked spices from her hometown in India. Sabina continues to recreate this dish in Australia, sourcing the same spices shipped from India to keep her heritage alive. Sabina shared, ‘even now, living in Australia, I continue to use the same spices. having them shipped from India to ensure that I can recreate her Chicken Masala just as she did.’ Every time Sabina prepares this recipe, she’s transported back to those cherished moments in Ammi’s kitchen. ‘I hope by sharing this recipe, it brings as much joy and warmth to your table as it has to mine over the years.’ Sabina’s contribution to the cookbook is more than a recipe; it’s a powerful lesson in culture, tradition and craftmanship. Teachers like Sabina who inspire students by sharing not only their knowledge, but also their rich personal experiences, demonstrate the value of diversity in education.
