Fascinating Numbers from the Shanghai Shipping Exchange that show the why the ANZ ocean freight trade is the way it is. Despite a 452.2% year on year increase in the AU SCFI rate, the CNSHA to AUMEL rate is less than a fifth of the rate from CNSHA to USWC. This is the lowest of all non Intra-Asia trade lanes. This is further evidence as to why the shipping lines are moving smaller vessels onto the ANZ trade, which has lead to allocations being reduced/revoked, and prices increasing. Space is going to be crucial over the coming months, to ensure stock gets here as we enter the Christmas period, with the main driver of conversations now becoming "do you have the space", rather than "what is the price". Transpacific freight rates have corrected after rising for more than three months, as capacity additions have begun making an impact. Falling 2% week to week it’s a già sign .

China has returned from their week long holiday – Golden Week. Demand has been slow since their return, but production and bookings are expected to pick up in the coming weeks. This weak demand has dictated a slight drop, or stabilisation in the freight rates for Fremantle. Port congestion in main ports China and delays due to typhoons have seen some shipping line schedules slide. Pushing estimated times of departure (ETD) or sliding is also common practice for lines during this long holiday. For Fremantle destined cargo, we are expecting a slight, welcomed reduction in rates for the second half of October.  The rumours of MSC’s new direct service from Shanghai and Shekou to Fremantle entering the market have materialised, albeit with a slight change in the ports of call. The service has been announced quietly (still to show officially on MSC’s website - that I can see) as Shanghai – Hong Kong (to allow for China feeder connections) – Jakarta – Fremantle. This new service will avoid any congestion in Singapore.   The East Coast of Australia shows the tale of two services (ha, actually multiple services). Some rates have risen, with carriers attempting to introduce GRIs (General Rate Increase), while other carriers are holding their rates for the coming weeks. Globally, the China to US rates have seen a decline with rumours that carriers are planning to reduce deployed capacity on this trade lane to try and stop rates from falling any further. What is everyone else seeing out there in the market? PS - I thought this picture would bring some humour to an otherwise dry post 😂

If the current market was an egg, it would be soft. If it was a steak, it would be medium. The shipping analysts like to call it “steady to soft”. Whose analogy do you like better? 😃 The China - Australia trade is experiencing a bit of a lull, it will be interesting to see in the next few weeks whether this is still due to people holding off departures to avoid unwanted arrivals during the Christmas period.   Repeated attempts recently by carriers to increase the rates have had little effect – as the volumes have dropped the freight rate has dropped also. We have seen an increased number of blank sailings, this is used to stop the rates from dropping even further, but on the flip side, it causes instability in scheduling. We must always remember that the market is cyclical, and rates and services are so intertwined – what goes up must come down. There are no reports currently of equipment shortages, booking issues or extended dwell times in Singapore – but I’m not going to be that person that announces that “it’s all smooth sailing”. 😆 Let’s give it a week and check back in again! Here’s a picture of the CMA CGM Tage that is currently alongside in Fremantleat DP World , she’s due to leave later today.  Did you know that she was one of the vessels attacked in January this year while travelling through the Southern Red Sea? The recent US dockworkers strike led to a supply chain situation Australians are all too familiar with… panic buying of toilet paper. 🧻 Last week I posted about the dispute between the International Longshoreman’s Association (ILA), representing 45,000 dockworkers, and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX), representing shipping companies in the ports operated by ILA members. At issue was a demand for a 77% pay rise over six years and a guarantee that jobs would not be lost due to automation in ports. The USMX had offered a 50% rise over the same period, which was not acceptable to the ILA, who also felt the language around automation was too vague. It got to the point where the ILA’s members walked off the job, bringing the 14 ports along the USA’s East and Gulf coasts to a standstill. Fortunately, the strike was called off after 4 days when the two parties agreed in principle to a 62% pay rise over the next six-year contract period. But not before it cost the US economy an estimated $18 billion in lost productivity. When the strike became public, consumers reacted as consumers tend to do these days, by emptying supermarket shelves of toilet paper. Many of the necessities sold in US supermarkets, especially fresh food like bananas and dry items like coffee, are imported, most often arriving by ship from South America, so the strike threatened to spike prices if those goods became scarce. Ironically, toilet paper is NOT one of those products. 90% of toilet paper consumed in the US is made in domestic factories, so the item is not subject to disruptions in the seaborne freight supply chain. Maybe we need a supply chain sensitivity index? I think it’s current strength is at 1 ply.

Exciting times ahead

With so much global action affecting shipping in recent times, I thought it would assist Australian shippers with an overview of where we at GPSM see the state of play for the International Logistics Industry The USA Port strike was called off, they have come to an interim agreement and postponed any strike action till Jan. With any luck the agreements will be finalised by then to avoid the Jan planned action. This is good news as will allow a return to normal for USA traffic. The dispute is about pay (as usual!) workers looking for 75 % increase over 5 years and it appears ports have agreed to 50 % over 5 years. The transit via the Cape of good Hope has now settled in even with the threat of various wars in the region. Emergency surcharges are being incorporated into the rates, these surcharges have been reduced now that associates costs have been stabilised. We don’t expect any changes to these routes as the threats in the Suez canal are still ongoing. There is ongoing talk the peak season has already eased thus a good sign for rates dropping. We have seen some drops already from China however we need to wait till after the current holidays in China to determine the trend. Next rates will be applicable from 15/10. Some lines have announced there will be increases however that remains to be seen. It is thought that the peak season being finished is a result of the fact that there was a huge early demand around April, which is very unusual. Shipping patterns post Covid continue to be abnormal with annual trends still not fully restored. Rates on the East/West Routes, China to USA and Europe have dropped significantly as volumes have dropped. This is also a good sign the peak has been reached. Chinese New Year 2025, is starting quite early from 29/1/25. This will be interesting as comes on the back of the Christmas slowdown. Delays in Singapore have improved, now a few days to a week. Delays in Port Klang still extensive although improving. At one stage they were up to 6 weeks now around 2 weeks. We are still feeling the impact of the Suez Canal closure, this has affected the volumes of containers in Asian transhipment ports. Shipping lines still adjusting scheduling to improve overall transits. Rates from SE Asia are still at higher levels, no significant reductions. We will wait and see what happens after 15/10. Rates from Europe and USA fairly stable.

My Thank You Message for 100,000 LinkedIn Followers People who know me personally are aware that after supply chain, my second passion is cricket. But unlike supply chain, I’m ‘pretty rubbish’at it. I’ve never scored a century—not in the backyard, not even during COVID when I played with my 12-year-old son with no fielders! However, I am a ‘decent’leg-spin bowler, so making a century was always a lifelong dream.  Well, that dream just came true... on LinkedIn! 🎉 Hitting 100,000 followers feels like my very own supply chain century! I still remember back in 2017, I had just 9,000 followers. Through perseverance, creativity, and a desire to share what I’ve learned in the supply chain “field,” I’ve made it this far.  To put things into perspective: the supply chain community is relatively small on LinkedIn—about 8 million of us in a sea of 1 billion users, or just 0.1% of the platform. Most of my posts focus on supply chain education, mixed with daily quotes and the occasional meme. So, reaching this milestone without a LinkedIn Top Voice badge feels like a huge honor. 🙌  That said, follower count is really just a vanity metric. It’s the engagement, the meaningful discussions, and the reach that truly matter. This is something I always emphasize to businesses reaching out for sponsored posts. The algorithm today allows anyone to create significant impact, even with a smaller following.  To the amazing supply chain community: thank you for your support, your engagement, and your inspiration. You motivate me to keep sharing, learning, and growing.  So, the moral of the story? It doesn’t matter if you’re terrible at cricket—you might just excel at something else.
