At Edith Cowan University we believe in the power of Indigenous knowledges. We are currently recruiting two #Indigenous #lecturers, one in #nursing and one in #midwifery, to join School of Nursing and Midwifery - Edith Cowan University. Why is this so important? We must increase the number of Indigenous nurses and midwives in our professions to help improve the health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Increasing the number of Indigenous academics provides culturally safe space for learning for our students, helping to improve retention and success of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. We also want to support Indigenous academics to flourish and contribute to research. These aspirations are fundamental to achieving the goals of #GENKEII. We are committed to this mission! #GENKEII #CATSINaM #IndigenousAcademic #Hiring #CulturalSafety #IndigenousKnowledge To read more about one of our students, and to access the link to apply for the positions, please see below… I would really appreciate if you can share this opportunity through your networks.

Born at just 23 weeks, Rhiarn faced a harrowing series of medical complications, which resulted in long hospital stays, along with the loss of some of her fingers and toes. Despite these challenges, she emerged as a resilient, determined individual with a passion for helping others: https://lnkd.in/gVnx2Q5z "I never thought I was smart enough to attend university," she admits. "But now, halfway through my Bachelor of Science (Nursing) degree, I've built a strong network of support, including my AMTP tutor, access and inclusion services, and academic mentors." As a proud Ngemba woman, Rhiarn dreams of working with Aboriginal women and premature babies after completing a Graduate Diploma in Midwifery Practice. For Rhiarn, nursing is more than just a profession — she firmly believes that Aboriginal culture's holistic view of health, which considers mind, body, and spirit, should be applied to all patients, regardless of background. "It's highly important to include Aboriginal knowledges in the curriculum," she emphasises. "This helps future healthcare professionals, both Australian and international, develop cultural awareness and sensitivity." Rhiarn underscores the importance of understanding the history and impact of colonisation on Aboriginal communities and the resulting burden of disease. "Health professionals need to be informed and empathetic, without bias or judgment. This understanding supports reconciliation by promoting awareness of the ongoing challenges Aboriginal people face." Rhiarn's journey is a testament to the power of resilience, culture, and education. Her story is one of many that underscores the importance of Indigenous Knowledges in shaping a more inclusive and compassionate healthcare system. Edith Cowan University invites Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nurses and midwives to consider applying for the Lecturer in Indigenous Knowledges roles in the School of Nursing. If you're passionate about teaching, shaping the next generation of healthcare professionals, consider joining ECU. https://lnkd.in/g3B2UV9f #nursing #nurse #midwife #midwifery #indigenousculture #indigenousknowledge #holistichealthcare

Delighted to see Dr Tania Beament from School of Nursing and Midwifery - Edith Cowan University featured in this publication. Last year during the bushfires in WA, Tania's quick thinking and team management saw us transform our simulation centre into temporary accommodation for the residents and staff of Elderbloom Community Care Centres a local residential aged care facility.
The impact of climate change on global health is undeniable and, as extreme weather events escalate, healthcare systems face growing pressures. The direct health implications of these events are substantial, encompassing not only immediate injuries and fatalities but also long-term psychological, physical and social health issues. This report presents a series of case studies of nurses and midwives who have led or been actively involved in responding to a range of extreme weather events. Their inspirational leadership during the crisis situations portrayed will enable healthcare and educational organisations to re-imagine the role of nurses and midwives in preparing for and responding to climate driven disasters. Thank you to @RockKitchenHarris for their extraordinary design and artwork https://lnkd.in/gsmuUVJJ
