What if the key to sustainable water management lies in something as overlooked as brine? Far from being mere waste, brine from desalination and industrial processes holds untapped potential, especially when innovative minimization strategies come into play. Leading the charge in this domain is the application of advanced pretreatment and membrane technologies. These methods drastically reduce brine volumes while recovering precious minerals like lithium and potassium—essential resources for industries ranging from agriculture to renewable energy. In fact, new thermal-based technologies and emerging techniques such as eutectic freeze crystallization are revolutionizing how we handle brine, turning an environmental challenge into a valuable asset. A shining example of success in this arena is the implementation of brine minimization techniques in regions facing acute water scarcity. These strategies not only help in protecting marine ecosystems from the harmful effects of high-salinity brine but also contribute to sustainable practices by conserving freshwater resources and promoting resource recovery. Through IDRA's commitment to energy-efficient and environmentally responsible solutions, the future of brine management is being redefined. We are transforming what was once a burden into a beacon of sustainability. Water and energy are the lifeblood of modern society, yet their interdependence often goes unnoticed. The Water-Energy Nexus—the intricate relationship between these two vital resources—has become one of the most pressing challenges of our time. As we push for sustainable development in an increasingly resource-constrained world, understanding this nexus is no longer a choice, but a necessity. Water is a critical component in virtually every aspect of energy production. Whether it’s cooling thermal power plants, generating hydropower, or extracting fossil fuels, energy systems cannot function without water. Meanwhile, the reverse holds true: significant amounts of energy are required to extract, treat, and distribute water for human consumption, agriculture, and industrial use. The complexity deepens as we factor in climate change, which is intensifying water scarcity and putting additional pressure on energy systems. The result? A dual crisis that threatens not only environmental sustainability but also global economic stability and human welfare. This intricate connection highlights the need for a holistic and immediate approach to resource management, one that leverages advanced technologies and practices to optimize both water and energy use. At IDRA, we’re committed to addressing the water-energy nexus by advancing innovative, forward-thinking solutions. Our work focuses on creating synergies between water and energy systems to ensure long-term resource efficiency and resilience. Through initiatives like the IDRA Award for The Most Innovative Water-Energy Nexus Project, we celebrate groundbreaking projects that integrate these two essential sectors in ways that are both sustainable and scalable. #IDRA #WaterEnergyNexus #IDRAWorldCongress2024 #ResponsibilityofWaterFootprint #WaterConservation #Sustainability #CleanWaterActionNow #UNSDG6 #WaterStewardship #IDRABeWaterPositive #WaterReuse #Desalination #IWRM Source: https://lnkd.in/exttrUjK https://lnkd.in/g7KwnPc https://lnkd.in/dNFFyY2E

There's a trend established to track footsteps, but how many of us know our water footprint? The water footprint concept measures the volume of water consumed, evaporated, and polluted in making a product or service, such as food or electricity. It has three components: green, blue, and grey. To illustrate, consider the journey of a single cup of coffee. Growing, producing, and delivering that cup to your table requires about 140 litres of water. This includes green water to irrigate the coffee plant, blue water for processing, and grey water for treating agricultural runoff. Everyday activities, from the food we eat to the clothes we wear, carry hidden water costs. Therefore, it is vital to understand our water footprint to make more informed decisions and reduce our impact on the planet. Simple changes, like opting for more sustainable products and supporting water-efficient and reuse technologies, can make a significant difference. At IDRA, we’re dedicated to helping you understand and manage your water footprint. Join us in our mission to promote sustainable water use and ensure a secure water future for all. Is water a fundamental right for a person? Imagine life without safe drinking water and sanitation. What would be the consequences? Inconvenience, discomfort, or compromised personal hygiene? How long before your family got sick? While some enjoy the luxury of fresh, clean water daily, many communities around the world struggle to access this basic necessity. Safe and adequate water and sanitation are as critical as the air we breathe. Living without them, even temporarily, is not just dangerous and destabilizing; it is an existential threat. New World Bank research, ‘WASH Poverty Diagnostic’, reveals that access to improved water on premises could be as low as 32% in rural areas and as high as 69% in urban areas. The research finds that inequitable access is due to poor governance and a lack of specific attention to the poor and vulnerable; not only is it a matter of life and death, but water and sanitation are also basic rights. IDRA works towards mitigating these impacts by advocating for the utilization of responsible desalination and water reuse solutions to produce alternative water sources which can support local governments in the environmental restoration of watersheds. The aim is to ensure that everyone, regardless of their socio-economic status, can enjoy their right to safe and clean water. The world is full of paradoxes. On one hand, there is strong advocacy for reducing water consumption; on the other, modern life is deeply dependent on it. Oceans generate up to 80% of the oxygen we breathe, and nearly 40% of the world’s population relies on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods. The "blue" aspect of the "green" transition to a sustainable economy is vital and should not be overlooked. Unfortunately, the "blue economy" has not received the priority it warrants. It is crucial to recognize that there is no green without blue, and there will be no blue without green—they support and complement each other. As governments and businesses work towards their net-zero commitments, it is imperative that they also consider the sustainability of oceans and coastal resources. Achieving net-zero goals is impossible without acknowledging the essential role of the blue component in the green transition. IDRA, at the forefront of the global desalination and water reuse community, emphasizes the importance of water stewardship. The aim is to minimize the negative impact associated with the use of natural water resources. Let’s work together to create a future where green and blue sustainability go hand in hand, which is essential for the well-being of the planet.
