This week from Monday 16 September to Sunday 22 September is Dementia Action Week 2024 and this year’s theme is “Act Now for a Dementia-Friendly Future.” We’re encouraging everyone to learn more about dementia and how you can help shape our communities. Tune into the #PsychMatters episode with old age psychiatrists, A/Prof Samantha Loi and A/Prof Steve Macfarlane, who discuss ‘Young onset dementias’, including frontal lobe dementias. They discuss the challenges in diagnosing dementia in younger people, investigations including neuroimaging and cognitive testing and potential red flags that might lead the general psychiatrist to consider a dementia diagnosis when reviewing middle-aged adults with psychiatric symptoms and conditions. Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is an annual celebration for all New Zealanders to show their support for the Māori language, an official language of New Zealand. At the end of August, we had the pleasure of hosting the 2024 PIF Retreat in beautiful Meeanjin (Brisbane) at the State Library of Queensland. We proudly sponsored a fantastic group of 22 #PIFmembers, including passionate #medicalstudents and #juniordoctors from across Australia. The Retreat kicked off with a vibrant meet-and-greet dinner at El Planta Restaurant, where connections were made, and everyone could discuss their passion for #psychiatry. Wednesday was a day full of thought-provoking presentations from the brilliant A/Prof Nicola Warren, Dr Melanie Johnston, Ms Catrin Culla, A/Prof Shiuchi Suetani, Mr Hamza Vayani, and Dr Nicola Campbell. The day was topped off with an enlightening visit to the Queensland Art Gallery of Modern Art, at the North by Northwest exhibition. On Thursday the packed program continued with incredible insights from Dr Yoon Kwon Choi, Dr Ursula Byrne, Dr Matilda Mackay-Sim, and Dr Hethal Hargovan. A massive thank you to all the phenomenal speakers who shared their knowledge and experience which left everyone inspired and eager to pursuit psychiatry. Looking forward to next year!
