Retirement communities are nothing without the people who call them ‘home’. It’s always great to catch up with Roger Pallant, vice-president of the NSW Retirement Village Residents Association, and a passionate advocate for his members. While we differ in AFL club support (he’s a Collingwood Football Club man), we’re on the same page when it comes to creating exceptional retirement village environments. I just hope the Adelaide Football Club finish above the magpies next year.

Retiree 'hot spots' are cropping up around Australia, which is no surprise given the demographic changes taking place. It was great to discuss how industry is accommodating for this 'silver tsunami' with The Courier-Mail's Elizabeth Tilley - and what it means for younger homebuyers, too. After all, the problem isn’t the demand, popularity or appetite for age-friendly retirement communities across the country - it’s the lack of supply. One of the great things about Australia’s retirement industry is the people who power it forward every day. It was great to catch up with more than 200 colleagues and friends at the Property Council NSW’s Retirement Forum in Sydney. I was fortunate to moderate a discussion with Paul Martin, Simon Furness, Jane Monk and Michelle Bruggeman about the big things shaping age-friendly communities. Their insights, passion and commitment is obvious - and so are the opportunities on the horizon. Many thanks to event partners Growthbuilt, Keyton, Integrity Health & Safety and Taskflo, and the wonderful Property Council NSW team.

Housing, health and happiness are important ingredients for longevity. It was great to participate in a roundtable discussion recently, hosted by Keyton, which took a deep dive into how older Australians can live the healthiest, most productive and enjoyable lives possible. There are several challenges impacting our country at the moment, many of them associated with affordability, supply and healthcare. The good news is that retirement communities are armed with solutions to many of these problems. You can access the article from The Australian here: https://lnkd.in/gbHk6z6q Well done to the Keyton team for driving this timely conversation.

What do you think are some of the key challenges Australia is facing in providing the best possible outcomes for our ageing population? I recently had the pleasure of hosting an insightful roundtable at our Keyton offices in Sydney, focusing on how we can better support older Australians to live the healthiest and happiest lives possible, as well as how independent retirement living communities help can help ease the country's housing crisis. The discussion brought together industry leaders and experts, including Karen Armstrong, Director of Planning at @Ethos Urban, Daniel Gannon, Executive Director at the Retirement Living Council, Tom Loomes, Executive Director at the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, Greg Cronan, CEO of Intergenerational Learning Australia, Dr John Ward, Co-founder of the Hunter Ageing Alliance and our own Tamara Rasmussen, Head of Resident Operations. Our expert panel explored innovative strategies and shared valuable insights on enhancing the quality of life for our ageing population. The consensus was clear: where and how senior Australians live, and the proximity of social activities as well as health and wellbeing services available to them, are critical to ensuring they can live their best lives. A big thank you to all the participants for their valuable contributions and to everyone who made this event a success. Let’s continue to work together towards a brighter, healthier future for all. I have shared some links to articles about the event below. We're on the hunt for our next media and communications guru at the Retirement Living Council. Australia's population is ageing, housing supply is in deficit, and the care landscape is under duress - on the upside, the retirement and seniors' living industry is equipped with housing and health solutions to assist consumers and governments alike. If you or someone in your network is looking for their next opportunity, we'd love to hear from you.
