We’re still riding the wave of SciFest 2024’s smashing success!   This 4-hour celebration of STEAM last Friday rounded out a tremendous National Science Week on campus. Engaging local community members and science lovers, SciFest drew a crowd of thousands! The festival’s immersive activities and shows were presented by staff from across the Faculties of Science, UNSW Medicine & Health, UNSW Arts, Design & Architecture and UNSW Engineering. Thank you to everyone who attended and a special thanks to all the UNSW staff who gave their time, energy and expertise to create this inaugural #SciFest. 📸 Maja Baska

Senior Bidjigal Elder William Victor Simms has been awarded UNSW Sydney’s highest honour – an honorary doctorate in recognition of his service to the community. Uncle Vic has devoted his life to music and serving community, with a focus on improving the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people. He has worked closely with UNSW Medicine & Health to provide cultural advice, guidance, and education sessions. “I’m almost 80 years of age but you never stop learning. You never stop believing in culture,” said Uncle Vic, in his occasional address at yesterday’s Medicine & Health graduation ceremony. Uncle Vic encouraged graduates to go out into communities and “bring home the good things that happen”. “I’ve been through the stages of having people dictate where you go and where you can’t go through my life (but) I’ll continue, and I’ll persevere in trying to bring us all together. Because we have to come together, we can’t do it on our own,” he said. Read more: https://bit.ly/470lcNE

We are excited to announce our ‘Connected’ partnership with the Telstra Foundation on the Young Indigenous Model of Mental Health Care Study. This project led by Professor Maree Toombs is the first of its kind and seeks to develop a culturally appropriate model of care for young Indigenous Australians, starting in the Yirrkala community in the Northern Territory. It is designed to empower young people to utilise Yolŋu worldview, knowledge and practices, alongside Western treatment approaches, to choose their model of mental health care. “This innovative mental health project will ask young Yolŋu people between 15 and 24 years of age about their views on mental health and wellbeing,” says Professor Toombs. “By centring their voices and developing a model of care from both non-Indigenous and Indigenous worlds and bodies of knowledge, this project will enable a self-determined and much more effective approach to mental health treatment for them.” Learn more about the ‘Connected’ partners program, here: https://bit.ly/4cxA6M8

UNSW Scientia Associate Professor Natalie Taylor and her team have received $5.5 million in funding from the Medical Research Future Fund to establish a newborn screening platform which could eventually screen for hundreds of life-threatening genetic illnesses at birth. “Newborn screening genomic technologies are rapidly advancing,” says A/Prof. Taylor. “The new technology will enable expansion of screening for newborns and enhance standard technology which currently detects only 32 conditions.” The project involves a trial of the new technology with 60,000 newborns in Queensland, in collaboration with Queensland Health. “I look forward to working closely with the health system and community to ensure the newborn screening genomic technologies have the best chance of producing life-changing and life-saving benefits for newborns across Australia,” says A/Prof. Taylor. The ‘Shop2Stop Hypertension’ trial has launched, giving NSW residents a new way to conveniently check their vital health measures. Led by UNSW and The George Institute for Global Health Professor Alta Schutte PhD FESC ISHF FRSSAf, this trial has set up SiSU Health Group stations that screen for high blood pressure in 30 Bunnings stores across NSW. ‘Shop2Stop Hypertension’ aims to raise community awareness for high blood pressure, which is still the top risk factor for death in Australia and is being increasingly linked to fatal strokes in men aged 25 to 49 years. “They wouldn’t think of themselves as being at risk,” Prof. Schutte says. “We needed to think creatively about reaching this and other groups at high risk, in the places they already go, and Bunnings stores are a great way to do that.” Learn more about the trial: https://bit.ly/4cp2Iat
