We’re launching a project to develop a high-efficiency laser cladding system that enhances fully automated laser cladding technology. This system will produce multi-functional metal matrix composite (MMC) coatings for industries like marine, mining, and defence. By tackling the challenges of sourcing replacement parts from overseas, this technology will enable local repairs of worn or corroded parts, boosting efficiency and supporting Australian manufacturing. Partnering with ACM CRC, LaserBond Limited (ASX:LBL) and University of Sydney to create a comprehensive catalogue for producing high-wear and corrosion-resistant coatings. Ecovacs robot vacuums have been found to suffer from critical cybersecurity flaws. They are collecting photos, videos, and voice recordings from inside customers' houses to train the company's AI models. Researchers from the Australian Centre for Robotics and School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering have developed a "privacy-preserving" camera. The technology scrambles the image taken by the camera beyond recognition before it is even digitised, so there is no way that remote attacks can access the raw imagery. Last week the Australian Centre for Robotics hosted a Robotics Collaboration Strategy Retreat: a day of deep thinking about the big open research challenges that drive us, and new opportunities for multi-disciplinary collaboration! We had fantastic guest presentations from Mike Zimmerman, Benjamin Eggleton, Salah Sukkarieh, and Ian Manchester, as well as a series of collaborative workshop sessions with attendees from all across the Faculty of Engineering - University of Sydney, as well as the faculties of Science, University of Sydney, Medicine and Health - University of Sydney, Architecture, Design and Planning - University of Sydney, ARIAM Research Hub, Brain and Mind Centre, John Grill Institute, Sydney Nano, University of Sydney, Sydney Imaging, Sydney Manufacturing Hub, and DVCR Portfolio. It was great to see the energy and excitement at all the tables, as new ideas bounced back and forth! We invite our female alumni and industry partners to be mentors in the University of Sydney Women in Engineering Industry Mentoring Program to help guide our next generation of female engineers. As a mentor, you'll be matched with one to two women studying engineering. You will help your mentees transition into the workplace by offering guidance on networking, understanding career opportunities, and managing workplace challenges. The commitment is one hour per month (face-to-face or online) from March to September 2025. Specific dates and times are to be agreed upon between mentor and mentee(s). A program launch evening will take place on 19 March 2025 for mentors to meet their mentees. If you're interested in becoming a mentor for this program, please register your interest via the link below: https://lnkd.in/g6qikfP3 #WomenInEngineering #Mentoring
