A diagnosis like breast cancer can be very overwhelming. The right support can help to get through a very tough time. Support can also have a positive effect on the outcome of treatment. Studies have shown that women who had limited support from family and friends after their diagnosis, had higher risks of their cancer reoccurring, and some even had higher risks of death. There are three main types of support; Informational (medical advice or suggestion from an expert), emotional (listening encouragement and being present) and tangible support (cooking meals and driving them to appointments).

Knowing the signs and symptoms of breast cancer is important, early detection, often through screening, can catch the disease when it is most treatable. Some warning signs of breast cancer include: 1. New lump in the breast or underarm (armpit). 2Thickening or swelling of part of the breast. 3. Irritation or dimpling of breast skin. 4. Redness or flaky skin in the nipple area or the breast. 5. Pulling in the nipple or pain in the nipple area. 6. Nipple discharge other than breast milk, including blood. 7. Any change in the size or the shape of the breast. 8. Pain in any area of the breast. It is good to note that these symptoms can happen with other conditions that are not cancer. If you have any signs or symptoms that concern you, please be sure to see your doctor immediately.

If it wasn't clear by now- PCOS is a complex condition! While the exact cause remains unknown, several factors can contribute to its development. They are mainly linked to hormonal and genetic factors including, hormonal imbalance, insulin resistance and hereditary risks. While you can’t change your genes or there's no cure for PCOS currently, understanding your family history as well as how your hormones affect your health, can help you seek early diagnosis and treatment to manage symptoms more effectively. We believe that knowledge is power! #PCOSAwareness #HormonalImbalance #PCOSFacts #PCOSBarbados #HormonalHealth #PCOSWarriors #YouAreNotAlone

This discovery by Stein and Leventhal was documented in 1935. Since the, research has progressed, and the understanding of the condition expanded beyond just ovarian cysts to include a range of hormonal imbalances, insulin resistance, and other metabolic issues. Eventually, the name was updated to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome aka PCOS to reflect the broader set of symptoms. PCOS awareness and research have come a long way, but there's still much to learn. Together, we can continue raising awareness, fighting stigma, and advocating for better health for all persons with PCOS! #PCOSHistory #SteinLeventhalSyndrome #PCOSAwareness #PCOSFacts #PCOSBarbados #WomensHealth #HormonalHealth

Having a family member with fibroids increases your risk. However, just because a family member had fibroids doesn’t necessarily mean you will too. Many fibroids contain changes in genes that differ from those in normal uterine muscle cells. A 2012 study published in The American Journal of Human Genetics, detected genetic variants significantly associated with uterine fibroids. Just as relevant to fibroid development are hormone levels. Both estrogen and progesterone levels directly affect fibroid development, which is why pregnant women often experience sudden fibroid growth.
