It is rare to find people who willingly relive their trauma to help others. Al-Amin Noyon, a former migrant worker, won the Trafficking in Persons Heroes award, given by the US State Department to outstanding people around the world fighting to end human trafficking. Like other migrants, Noyon wanted to go abroad in the hope of a better life. It was upon his arrival in Malaysia that he realised he had been trafficked. After being forced to work all day and living in an abandoned warehouse for months, Noyon broke out of the warehouse, risking his life to escape the horror. Coming back to Bangladesh, Noyon knew he had to tell his story and help others who had their dreams shattered like his. Bangladesh is the sixth largest migrant sending country globally with 7.4 million migrants going abroad annually. Noyon used to be a number in this database. Now, he is leading the emergency support and reintegration programme for returnee migrants in BRAC and is known for his work in fighting to end human trafficking.
