The European Commission has unveiled today its Action Plan for the future of the European automotive sector. ADPA - Automotive Data Publishers Association welcomes the important announcements it contains on #digitalisation (with a long-awaited reference to access to in-vehicle #data and functions) and e-mobility (with much-needed measures on #battery repairability), and calls for rapid and ambitious progress on these questions. Michael Pedersen, ADPA President, commented: “The political recognition that access to data and functions is a critical issue for the competitiveness of the European automotive sector is a welcomed progress. However, the urgent need for a dedicated and complete legislation remains high, and our ecosystem cannot afford another postponement of long awaited measures of which the absolute necessity has been unequivocally documented. Similarly, only a rapid materialisation of measures to improve batteries’ repairability will help build customers’ confidence and demand for electric vehicles.” Pierre Thibaudat, ADPA Director General, added: “The European Union’s institutions now have a clear roadmap to tackle these issues and enable the automotive #aftermarket, responsible for the vast majority of automotive jobs and the vast majority of the lifecycle of vehicles, in untapping the potential of automotive data, building consumers’ confidence in e-mobility, and unleashing the innovation and competitiveness of European companies - ADPA is there to support them in this journey.”

As the automotive sector is going through major changes impacting the entire value chain, its ecosystem and end-consumers, ADPA shares its vision and recommendations at the occasion of the public consultation on the future of the European automotive industry, initiated in the framework of the Strategic Dialogue launched by the European Commission. The #aftermarket is the most important component of the automotive sector: it provides most of the 👩🏭 #jobs (and by far) and is responsible for the longest period of vehicles' life cycle (and here again, by far). The aftermarket also guarantees the 🦺 #safety; ♻️ #sustainability and 💶 #affordability of 🚌 🚑 🚕 🚗 🚚 #road #mobility. The aftermarket, finally, is a major contributor of #competitiveness for the European economy, and of #resilience for European society. But this essential, multi-faceted role is increasingly hampered by commercial and technical practices preventing fair🦾 #competition, limiting 💡#innovation, and reducing #consumers' choice and welfare. Our 3 core messages: 1️⃣ The European independent aftermarket plays a central role in automotive innovation (in the fields of #digitalisation, manufacturing, #CircularEconomy, diagnostics...), but closed systems impair more and more its ability to innovate 2️⃣ The European independent aftermarket plays a crucial and diverse role in the clean transition and #decarbonisation of road transport, but its ability to contribute to it might soon vanish. 3️⃣ European regulation is a source of unparalleled 💪 strength for the automotive sector, and enforcement, rather than deregulation, would support competitiveness. Our 2 calls for action: 🗣️ Representativity is key: all stakeholders must be involved, as early as possible. 🏃♂️➡️ Action cannot be delayed: much awaited (and prepared) draft legislations must be tabled, as early as possible. ADPA is looking forward discussing these issues with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the participating Members of the European Commission: Apostolos Tzitzikostas, Henna Virkkunen, Stéphane Séjourné, Wopke Hoekstra and Roxana Minzatu, and all engaged stakeholders.

On Monday, Patrick Lo Pinto, CEO of Tekné Consulting Srl and Board Member of ADPA - Automotive Data Publishers Association, will participate to a round-table on the proposal from the European Commission on the End-of-Life Vehicle (#ELV) regulation, organised by Pierfrancesco Maran MEP. The opportunity to discuss the contribution of the independent #automotive #aftermarket to #CircularEconomy and how our ecosystem ensures the 🦺 #safety, the ♻️ #sustainability and the 💶 #affordability of #road #mobility, as well as potential improvements to reinforce the proposal, in particular: 1️⃣ 💪 provisions on the conditions to access and the content of technical information and #data should be strengthened; 2️⃣ 🔎 the range of operators to be considered should be widened; 3️⃣ 🔋 the uptake of #EVs electric vehicles should be properly prepared and accompanied; 4️⃣ 💡 the capability and role of #repair and replacement for #circularity should not be underestimated and hindered; 5️⃣ ⌛ delays should be shortened.

Together with 9 other associations representing consumers and businesses, ADPA - Automotive Data Publishers Association strongly supports the launch by President Ursula von der Leyen of the European Commission’s Strategic Dialogue on the Future of the Automotive Sector. This initiative is a critical opportunity to shape a resilient and competitive automotive industry that benefits all. However, the challenges facing the automotive sector are far deeper and broader than the limited scope of the first Strategic Dialogue meeting suggests. For the Dialogue to be truly effective, it must adopt a holistic approach that addresses the entire industry’s long-term challenges. This requires the inclusion of all key players driving #innovation, including the #aftermarket, mobility service providers, and vehicle-related operators – sectors that are essential for ensuring the 🦺 #safety, ♻️ #sustainability and 💶 #affordability of #road #mobility. ADPA warmly welcomes the overall direction and ambition of the proposal of the European Commission on the end-of-life vehicle (#ELV)regulation, as it opens the way for positive developments for the #automotive #aftermarket, #consumers and, more generally, society and the #environment. This is fully in line with ADPA’s objective to ensure the continuous #safety, the #sustainability and the #affordability of #road #mobility. For the legislation to be fully efficient, it is crucial to ensure that there is no gap between the current reality and capability of the market and the objectives of the regulation, by ensuring that none of the specific competences of the multiple stakeholders is hindered. Additional attention also needs to be paid to ensure that #competition in the automotive aftermarket would actually be strengthened. The more operators are present, the more affordability and the more #innovation will be available for the handling of end-of-life vehicles. Finally, experience shows that legal clarity and consistency are paramount to prevent diverging, contradicting interpretations which would delay and hinder the proper materialisation of the intended objectives of the legislation. ADPA therefore considers that targeted, precise changes would significantly reinforce the spirit and the letter of the legislation. ADPA has identified issues around 5️⃣ main, often inter-related topics, and makes concrete recommendations accordingly. These 5 topics are: 1️⃣ 💪 provisions on the conditions to access and the content of technical information should be strengthened; 2️⃣ 🔎 the range of operators to be considered should be widened; 3️⃣ 🔋 the uptake of #EVs electric vehicles should be properly prepared and accompanied; 4️⃣ 💡 the capability and role of repair and replacement for circularity should not be underestimated and hindered; 5️⃣ ⌛ delays should be shortened.

At the occasion of its General Assembly, ADPA - Automotive Data Publishers Association has appointed a new Board of Directors, representing the diversity of the publishers of technical information used for the servicing of #vehicles and the competitive, innovative and reliable maintaining of the #safety; #sustainability and #affordability of #road #mobility over their lifetime. The new Board Members are: Michael Pedersen, Managing Director at Hella Gutmann Solutions A/S, as President; Matthew Wright, Director OEM Relations & Information Insight at ALLDATA Europe GmbH, as Vice-President; Patrick Lo Pinto, Chief Executive Officer at Tekné Consulting Srl, as Treasurer; Dennis de Buck, Executive Vice President Technical Data Products at TecAlliance GmbH, as Board Member; Michael Krampe, Global Sales Director -Key Accounts- at Infopro Digital Automotive SAS, as Board Member. Michael Pedersen, ADPA President, commented: “I feel humbled twice. First, because ADPA Members have entrusted us with the conducting of our vibrant association for the next three years. By doing so, they confirmed our assessment and shared our vision on how the independent #automotive #aftermarket can contribute to the safety, sustainability and affordability of road mobility if not hinged by undue #monopolies put in place by powerful market players. Second, because succeeding to Ralf Pelkmann, who has successfully accompanied and directed ADPA during near a decade is not an easy task. He has been instrumental in enabling our still young association to grow and to become a leading voice of the automotive aftermarket. He leaves us a sound and strong legacy upon which we can build to protect ever further our companies and our #customers, and we are deeply grateful for this precious contribution over the last years.” Matthew Wright, ADPA Vice-President, added: “This is the beginning of a new cycle for ADPA. With the new European Commission and the new European Parliament, the momentum is right to push for better legislation enabling #consumers to choose the workshop of their #choice to get their vehicles serviced. This imperative social need will remain a reality only if legislation ensures that these workshops and the value chain providing them with relevant inputs can access the increasingly complex and diverse technical information and #data which are needed to service increasingly sophisticated vehicles and vehicles’ components.” https://lnkd.in/gZT-EWbR
