🐟 Alienor moderated the EU Council Presidency Workshop debate for the Future of Aquaculture 🌍 💡 Yesterday, our Director Cécile Fouquet was honoured to moderate the workshop: "Making aquaculture a vital part of the European sustainable food system", organized by #HUNATiP under the auspices of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU #HU24EU at the Permanent Representation of Hungary to the EU 🐟 🔎 Hungary has ranked EU aquaculture development high in its priorities for its 6-months Presidency of the EU Council. This stakeholder workshop was one of the keystones of the Presidency's programme. 🐟 EU aquaculture has been identified by the EU institutions as a key sector for the future of food policy, aiming to increase EU's food systems autonomy and sustainability. However, although aquaculture has boomed at the World level, the EU sector is stagnating since 20 years and Europe is importing over 70% of the seafood it consumes. 🤝The pannel was composed of the main EU experts and representatives of the sector Brian Thomsen (Conseil Consultatif de l'Aquaculture), Lorella De La Cruz Iglesias (DG MARE, European Commission), Addy Risseeuw (EMPA), Javier Ojeda Gonzalez-Posada (FEAP), David Bassett (EATIP), Béla Halasi-Kovács (HUNATIP), Charlotte Epinay (Eurogroup for Animals), Daniel Żarski (PAN Olsztyn), Paul Mosnier (MRAG Ltd). It resulted in a very interesting and frank exchange about which policy change is needed to unlock the potential of sustainable aquaculture in the EU, and how to make it happen. 👉 The EU aquaculture sector has strong arguments to be successful: its commitment to sustainability and the strong stakeholder dialogue in place. #FoieGras 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗴 🦆 This week, Mélanie Lamaison and Martin Devaulx de Chambord accompanied the members of Euro Foie Gras (EFG) to the European Parliament (EP) in Strasbourg during the plenary session 🚄 By organising a series of bilateral meetings with the newly elected MEPs, they allowed EFG members to exchange with their EU representatives on important issues for the foie gras sector 🍽 🚚 🦆 💉 Following these productive meetings, EFG members held their Board meeting right in Strasbourg and Mélanie and Martin were on hand to ensure everything ran smoothly, making this vital part of the association's life a success! With more than 80 recommendations produced by the AAC members, these have been productive and fascinating years. 🙏 The AAC is now a well-established body that is consulted and listened to by the European Commission and Member States. While Cécile will miss her work with the AAC members, she is ready to embark on new and exciting Aliénor challenges! 💪 ➡ Cynthia Benites has been working in Aliénor for four years as a Manager in EU policies, and her experience and commitment make her the perfect fit for this role! This time was put into good use by discussing the future of Aqua Europa as well as key areas of focus, including new EU requirements, harmonized European certification 🔎 Following this productive meeting, we headed to the European Parliament for a visit - it's after all only a few steps away! - 📸 This visit provided valuable insights into the legislative processes and day-to-day activity of the European institutions, with the added perk of being very enjoyable! Indeed, we've been working intensively with newly elected MEPs to introduce them to recreational fisheries and its role in the EU’s Fisheries Policy. Tampere hosted some productive discussions about the future sector’s lobbying strategy and its key allies in the next 5 years. It was also the time to give a heartfelt thank you to Fred Bloot for his 11 years of dedicated service as President.
