About us
AMICE is the voice of the mutual and cooperative insurance sector in Europe AMICE, the Association of Mutual Insurers and Insurance Cooperatives in Europe, was created in January 2008 and its prime purpose is to ensure that the voice of the mutual and cooperative insurance sector in Europe is heard and that the interests of its members are taken into account in securing a level playing field for all insurers in Europe regardless of their legal form. AMICE provides a platform for mutual and cooperative insurers of all sizes to combine resources and expertise, exchange experiences across national borders and discuss key issues and concerns relating to planned legislative and regulatory changes and developments. In the 28 EU Members States, the close to 2,700 insurers united in the mutual and cooperative sector account for more than half of all insurance undertakings and for a market share of over 30% representing close to EUR 400 billion in insurance premiums. They provide cover for close to 400 million members-policyholders and employ 430,000 staff. AMICE has 78 full members across 21 countries including four national associations of mutual insurers. These associations represent a further circa. 700 mutual and cooperative insurers. AMICE has also two associate members and three supporting members., AMICE speaks for a significant part of the insurance sector.

An industry coalition of 23 international associations from multiple sectors, including AMICE Mutuals, today issued a joint statement, calling for a paradigm shift to reaffirm the General Data Protection Regulation’s (GDPR) risk-based approach as the guiding principle. Enhancing dialogue between regulators, including data protection authorities, and the industry is essential to harmonise the interpretation of the existing regime. This balance is crucial for protecting data, supporting operational business needs, and fostering innovation while ensuring legal compliance. Following the European Commission’s conclusions in its second report on the application of the GDPR, the coalition believes the new EU mandate must ensure a sustainable data use model, which should balance the right to personal data protection with other fundamental rights and public policy objectives, in line with the GDPR's original spirit. AMICE member Folksam highlights the role of insurance protection in the event of domestic violence to European insurance social partners. Folksam was the first Swedish insurance company to introduce protection in the event of domestic violence. The protection includes, among other things, financial support for urgent additional costs that arise for those who need to flee their home, as well as crisis support. The protection applies to everyone who is covered by home insurance, regardless of who signed it and regardless of whether you have your insurance via the union or via an individual home insurance. AMICE Mutuals reposted this
Last week, Folksam took part in AMICE’s Annual Congress in Bilbao, the most important gathering of CEOs and senior management from Europe’s mutual and cooperative insurance companies. Folksam’s representatives, Marie Rosvall, Regulatory Affairs and Emma Lindberg, Public Affairs, had many interesting exchanges of views with policy makers and colleagues from around Europe on various important topics. 🔶Petra Hielkema (she / her), Chairperson EIOPA, said that there will not be so much new regulation from the new Commission and that EIOPA will go back to supervising and implementing rather than regulating. – We welcome that European Commission and EIOPA will focus more upon how to ensure that existing regulation meet their intended purpose, says Marie Rosvall, Folksam. 🔶Petra Hielkema also said that she appreciates mutual insurance companies’ contribution to society and its stability. – As a mutual insurer, insuring two out of three Swedish households, we welcome that Petra Hielkema stressed that EU legislation shall work independently of the type of the company and that she wants to collaborate to ensure legislation works, says Emma Lindberg, Folksam. 🔶 Ruth Paserman, Director at DG Employment, European Commission, had an insightful analysis of the importance to work closely with the mutual insurance sector. 🔶 Butch Bacani, United Nations Environment Programme, held an inspiring talk about the net-zero developments, e.g. Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance, of which Folksam is one of the founders, and the work of the Net-Zero Insurance Alliance and Forum for Insurance Transition to Net-Zero. 🔶 Other important topics in the Congress were the contribution of mutuals to its customers and society, AI, climate risk, natural catastrophes, pension gap, Solvency II, DORA, IRRD, SFDR, CSRD, RIS, CMU, sustainability, Public Affairs and Advocacy. Thanks to AMICE Mutuals and Seguros Lagun Aro for arranging a good and very interesting congress, the hospitality, the great food of Bilbao, the guided tour and dinner in the #Guggenheim and for making all the fruitful discussions with colleagues possible via the #AMICE Congress.
