FTI and& 2024 by Leuven MindGate

TIME Magazine has announced the 200 best inventions of 2024, and TWO (!!) Leuven Innovation Region companies can claim a piece of that recognition! The Dott Achilles team of Jürgen Oskamp, pieter lesage and Koen Elsen can be proud to have co-developed the moonbird breathing and relaxation tool. It is their hardware that makes Stefanie Broes and Michael Broes' idea accessible to adults and children in their fight against stress and for improving sleep and daily balance. A truly well-deserved recognition for both companies! Comate Engineering & Design co-developed the ARC-EX system by ONWARD Medical, as shown on stage earlier this year at FTI and& 2024 by Leuven MindGate. Most people with a spinal cord injury do not have enough strong brain signals for adequate movement. Luckily, this medical hardware device serves as an amplifier by boosting their brain signals. Well done, teams of Sander Van den dries and Wouter Foulon! This global and prestigious recognition reaffirms the leading position of our hardware companies. Or... as we will say from now on: 1% of the world's best inventions in 2024 was made in the Leuven Innovation Region. Let's keep going Leuven & Beyond!

Yes yes yes! This is such good news for the whole hardware community in the Leuven Innovation Region! 👇 We are very happy to announce that Leuven MindGate & Start it Accelerate | @KBC combined, have obtained one of the five 'Leuven Entrepreneurs Fund' (=LEF) grants. Which means... that we now have the resources to setup a bespoke accelerator program to attract hardware (aka Mechatronics) startups to the Leuven Innovation Region! 🤖 As we all know, the Leuven Innovation Region and the Leuven MindGate ecosystem is a hotbed for hardware companies. Today, Jan Paesen and Dirk Lievens announced the news that thanks to this winning file, we want to bring even more hardware pioneers and world players to Leuven. 🏆 Moreover, we are looking for Leuven experts who want to act as coaches or mentors for hardware startups. Or for companies from the Leuven Innovation Region who want to act as 'godfather' for these young and creative entrepreneurs. We also want to link the program to the provision of specialized infrastructure where these startups can develop their R&D or production. In this way, we anchor a lot of value in terms of jobs, space and investment in the region, with the LEF-grant by stad Leuven. 🤓 "The unique aspect of this project is that we will effectively be able to provide a physical location and specialised tooling for these startups to develop", says Jan Paesen. "After all, hardware startups require very specific modalities. Just think of a warehouse, a welding station, 3D printers, R&D space, ... Een heikel, maar oh zo belangrijk actueel thema. Laten we ons weg-innoveren in België? Of vertrekken we vanuit eigen kracht? Onze ondernemers zien de internationale uitdagingen langs alle kanten komen: van snelle Chinese producten tot goedkopere Oost-Europese werkkrachten en Amerikaanse handelsakkoorden op losse schroeven. Daarbij wordt vooral met een vragende blik gekeken richting het Oosten: China eist haar plekje op het wereldtoneel op, op alle vlak. Hoe sterk staat onze eigen innovatie eigenlijk ten opzichte van dit oosters geweld? Kunnen we niet gewoon vertrekken 'vanuit eigen kracht'? Al deze aspecten zorgen ervoor dat vele Leuvense, Vlaamse ondernemers met een vragende blik naar de wereld kijken.
