Equality left behind. We are extremely surprised and disappointed with today's announced downgrade of the Commission portfolio of “Equality” to only be part of the portfolio of the Commissioner for Preparedness and Crisis Management. This represents a rollback on all the achievements of the previous Commission on Equality and sets a dangerous precedent. Yannis Vardakastanis, our President of the European Disability Forum, said: "It is unbelievable that the proposal excludes a standalone portfolio on Equality. We are outraged by this “downgrade”; it is a “slap in the face” for millions of people and risks all the progress that the Commission has made so far regarding our rights. We urgently ask members of the European Parliament to take charge in restoring the position of Commissioner for Equality as a standalone portfolio." Saddened to hear of the passing of Steve Silberman, author of NeuroTribes, and a great ally and advocate for the autistic community. We had the pleasure to interview Steve in 2015 for our LINK magazine. Autism-Europe aisbl explores the topic of promoting accessible tourism for autistic people with a general overview and good practice examples in one of the latest blogs recently published on European Disability Forum's website. This past week, Autism-Europe met with our partners within the Autism Spectrum Pathways project. Hosted by Fundacja SYNAPSIS in the beautiful city of Warsaw, Poland, we came together to finalise the results of this exciting project promoting autism employment. Soon, we will launch the project's latest result on the project's website, the Employment Guide. This high-quality guide identifies and addresses the challenges autistic people encounter in finding and retaining employment while also promoting a better understanding of autism for employers. Stay tuned for more information on the Employment Guide! Next to that, there is a lot more to come throughout the rest of 2024. On July 18, 2024, President Ursula Von der Leyen released the Political Guidelines of the European Commission for the period 2024-2029. 🟢 Autism-Europe welcomes the inclusion of autism research as a political priority, in line with one of our key policy demands. We look forward to cooperating with the European Commission and all relevant stakeholders to ensure that future research improves the lives of 7 million autistic people in Europe. 🔴However, we are very concerned by the lack of explicit commitment to advancing disability rights.
