Thank you to all of you who joined us last week to celebrate Monique Goyens, who after 17 years at the head of the BEUC Secretariat bows out this year for a well-deserved retirement - and passes the baton to our new DG Agustín Reyna. Consumer advocacy is not a sprint, it's a marathon (relay)!

We represent 44 independent national consumer organisations in Brussels and defend the interests of European consumers.
About us
The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) is the umbrella group in Brussels for 44 independent consumer organisations. Our main role is to represent them to the EU institutions and defend the interests of European consumers. Our daily work involves making sure the EU takes policy decisions that improve the lives of consumers. This covers a range of topics including competition, consumer rights, digital rights, energy, redress and enforcement, financial services, food, health, safety, sustainability and trade policy. Our acronym originates from our French name, ‘Bureau Européen des Unions de Consommateurs’. We were founded in 1962 by consumer groups from six Member States of, what was then, the European Economic Community (EEC). Nowadays our members are from 26 EU Member States as well as Iceland, North Macedonia, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Let’s not gamble with safety. All market players must play their part so that only safe products make it into consumers’ homes. At the International Product Safety week, our Director Agustín Reyna calls on policymakers to step up tremendously enforcement of product safety rules in Europe and upgrade rules on chemical safety. #IPSW2024

How can the EU promote rail travel that works for consumers? Join our #ConsumerDebate on 17/10 to find out! We'll explore ways to make rail more attractive, with insights from Lucile Buisson, Environment, Energy, and Transport Officer at our 🇫🇷 member UFC-Que Choisir.
Taking the train is a daily routine for many consumers, but certainly not for all compared to the predominance of the car. There are still too many barriers to rail, from poor timetables and lack of investment to practical issues like comfort and ticket prices. How can rail services be improved for consumers? Join our #ConsumerDebate on 17 October!

Good news that the Commission is looking further into whether Temu complies with the #DSA! This is a follow-up to our complaints from May where we raised many problematic issues on Temu. Consumers deserve better.

BEUC - The European Consumer Organisation reposted this
Today, the #EUCommission sent a request for information to #TEMU requesting the platform to provide detailed information and internal documents on the mitigation measures taken against the presence and reappearance of traders selling illegal products on its online marketplace. This is an important new development supporting the DSA complaint that BEUC - The European Consumer Organisation and its member organisations filed against TEMU in May 2024. More info about our DSA coordinated complaint here: https://lnkd.in/ePt-VbGP Read also our recent blogpost on this coordinated action: https://lnkd.in/emnhfVKa (Sebastien Pant) and today's PR from the Commission: https://lnkd.in/eRgywjHM More to come soon, stay tuned! with Maryant,Frederico,Fernando

The EU's response to address poor cybersecurity in connected products (#CRA) is now set to become law. Here's a quick look at how the rules will help consumers: 1) Manufacturers must provide software updates for connected products for as long as they are meant to be used OR for AT LEAST 5 years for longer lasting products. This is a huge improvement. Too often, products we buy end up no longer supported, causing frustration & waste ✌ 2) Sensitive products like smart home products, connected toys or health wearables, will now have to go through rigorous assessments to show that they conform to the law. Poor cybersecurity for these kinds of products is too great a risk. 3) If product manufacturers, through non-compliance with the law, end up harming consumers, there is now the possibility for consumers to seek redress in court as a group. ✌️ Another important win for consumers! The rules should enter into application for companies in 2027. We'll be keeping an eye on what companies do. Consumers need better cybersecurity and will now hopefully get it 😉

Consumers increasingly want to take action to reduce their ecological footprint and look out for environmental information when purchasing. However, a survey carried out by BEUC and ICRT shows that consumers cannot easily distinguish false from genuine claims and are increasingly frustrated with greenwashing. BEUC provides 8 recommendations for policymakers to regulate the Wild West of misleading #greenclaims. See below ⬇️

Our Director General Agustín Reyna was part of Consumers International Delegation to the first OECD - OCDE Consumer Policy Ministerial Meeting on behalf of BEUC to highlight the importance of cooperation between authorities and consumer groups. We're pleased to note the commitment from Ministers and Representatives in endorsing the increasingly important role of consumer policy for the digital and green transitions. This includes: 👉 Identifying and take action against ongoing and emerging consumer harms in digital markets; 👉 Strengthening consumer protection from misleading, deceptive, and unsubstantiated environmental claims, which thereby also levels the playing field for honest businesses and fosters business incentives to provide more sustainable options; 👉 Ensuring that online marketplaces take responsibility for the safety of the products listed on their sites. Thank you to Consumers International for the invitation to join this great delegation of consumer advocates!

Today is #WorldEcolabelDay 💚 The #EUEcolabel is a voluntary label that has been rewarding non-food products and services of environmental excellence since 1992, helping consumers in the process to make greener choices. In a new brochure produced in collaboration with the European Environmental Bureau, we detail five reasons why the EU Ecolabel is good for both people and planet 👇 and 👉 https://lnkd.in/eFupqQJA
