At the 5th edition of Swine Day 2024 in Bucharest, Romania, our consortium partner Stelian Baraitareanu from University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest presented #BIOSECURE project and requested the involvement of stakeholders from the pig industry in our ongoing activities. A big thank you to all organizers and participants for the productive discussions and exciting collaboration opportunities. 🤝
About us
Coordinated by Ghent University, BIOSECURE is a forthcoming four-year project supported by the European Union with a budget of 5 million euros and 19 participating partners, from 12 European countries. Biosecurity is critical for the management of animal health and disease control however, implementation at the farm level remains often insufficient. Therefore, the objective of the BIOSECURE project is to enable decision-makers in livestock farming to understand, prioritise and implement evidence-based, cost-effective, and sustainable biosecurity management systems. This will be carried out through various work packages and tasks that include: i) reviewing the current understanding of biosecurity throughout the livestock production chain, ii) quantifying the impact of biosecurity practices on the prevention of infection and spread of disease, and iii) enhancing current biosecurity measures, as well as expanding on these by carrying out field studies and performing experiments. iv) the socio-economic impact of the BIOSECURE project will be assessed and v) stakeholder engagement will be facilitated to support knowledge transfer and implementation of key exploitable results. The new or enhanced biosecurity management systems developed in the BIOSECURE project will help farmers of various animal species (pigs, poultry, cattle, small ruminants) and of different production types (indoor-outdoor) to keep animals healthy. Stay tuned for great research to follow.

In our latest publication, entitled "Making the invisible visible", we used substances glowing under ultraviolet light to mimic microbiological contamination, and assessed the effectiveness of different interventions aiming at improving #biosecurity compliance in anterooms of #poultry #farms. We argue that the use of this exercise material, perceived as playful and engaging, could be included in the framework of biosecurity training for all stakeholders of the poultry industry. Last week, we held the first of a series of workshops to discuss community-based approaches to #biosecurity in livestock farms. These workshops, part of the BIOSECURE research project, aim to foster emergence of a shared vision of collective biosecurity for members of the same community. The first workshop brought together a community of actors from the poultry sector in France, and sought to identify shared motivations and collective risk factors to be discussed during the subsequent workshops. 👉 We were glad to have the scientific manager of the BIOSECURE project at our last workshop to discuss our joint efforts in advancing farm-to-fork biosecurity. Together, #HEFARM and #BIOSECURE are creating strong synergies to tackle biosecurity challenges. Through shared activities and innovation, they're promoting safer, healthier practices across the entire farm-to-fork chain. 🐄 Universidad de Alcalá Incarlopsa ICPOR CAT.AL - Cluster Agrifood Lombardia ASRO - Romanian Standards Association Central Institute for Labour Protection - National Research Institute University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest Institut Pasteur SAN JORGE TECNOLOGICAS SL NOVAPTECH INRAE CSIC IRD IMIDRA - Instituto Madrileño de Investigación y Desarrollo Rural, Agrario y Alimentario - COUNTERFOG®

there are no magic solutions for this one. But there is a component that easily stands out: farm biosecurity. through increased biosecurity, advanced farm management and innovative solutions we can make it happen. #FarmBiosecurityChair COST BETTER BIOSECURE
Without action to #StopSuperbugs in animals, there could be annual global GDP losses of up to $40 billion. Reducing animal antimicrobial use to optimal levels within 20 years can raise GDP in 2050 by US$ 26 billion. More from our latest research, the #EcoAMR series: https://lnkd.in/eHbwFPNy

Mascots are more than just fun—they can embody the spirit of our work. We asked our Work Package Leaders what their #mascot would be if their work package had one. Hear how each leader creatively aligns their mascot with the #goals and values of their work package, offering insight into the dynamic #leadership driving their tasks. 🚀👀

Ilias Chantziaras, the scientific manager of the BIOSECURE project represented BIOSECURE at a biosecurity workshop titled "Latest Progress in Biosecurity: Farm to Fork", as part of the HE-FARM project coordinated by the Universidad de Alcalá held in Budapest 🇭🇺. Over two days, the event brought together experts and stakeholders to explore the latest biosecurity solutions and insights into the field’s most pressing challenges. It also provided an opportunity for BIOSECURE and HE-FARM to explore potential collaborations. 🤝 #Biosecure #FarmBiosecurityChair

Proud to announce that the last paper of the thesis of my former PhD-student and current Post doc at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (Utrecht University) has been published. We need to start digging further in the relation between epidemic and endemic diseases and choices made by farmers.
Last but not least, I am happy to share a paper from the final chapter of my PhD thesis. In this paper, we used a bioeconomic model to explore the effects of FMD control measures in different areas and how farmers' compliance might influence these measures. This paper would not have been possible without the support of my supervising team — Henk Hogeveen, Egil A.J. Fischer, Maart de Jong, Helmut Saatkamp — and our collaborator, Chaidate Inchaisri. Thank you all for your support throughout my PhD journey. https://lnkd.in/ePbaUztE
