Transforming crop protection

About us

We are a rapidly growing and transformative crop protection company developing a new generation of protein-based biocontrol solutions, shaping the future of sustainable and safe food supply. Based on our ground-breaking technology platform, Biotalys is developing a broad pipeline of effective and safe products with novel modes of action, addressing key crop pests and diseases across the whole value chain, from soil to plate. Biotalys’ unique protein-based biocontrols aim to combine the high-performance characteristics of chemicals with the clean safety profile of biologicals, making them ideal crop protection agents for both pre- and post-harvest applications. We are on track to launch our first biofungicide EVOCA in the USA and Europe, pending regulatory approval. Biotalys was founded in 2013 as a spin-off from the VIB (Flanders Institute for Biotechnology) and is listed on Euronext Brussels. The company is based in the biotech cluster in Ghent, Belgium. More information can be found on www.biotalys.com.

Proteins are in the spotlights! Great to see that the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry goes to three scientists active in #protein research. 👏 Biotalys uses proteins as active ingredients of its biocontrol solutions for agriculture. In addition, to predict the precise 3D shapes of proteins, our company recently embarked on a project with #AlphaFold2. The inventors of this AI-model have now been granted the Nobel Prize.

BREAKING NEWS The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with one half to David Baker “for computational protein design” and the other half jointly to Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper “for protein structure prediction.”   The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2024 is about proteins, life’s ingenious chemical tools. David Baker has succeeded with the almost impossible feat of building entirely new kinds of proteins. Demis Hassabis and John Jumper have developed an AI model to solve a 50-year-old problem: predicting proteins’ complex structures. These discoveries hold enormous potential.   The diversity of life testifies to proteins’ amazing capacity as chemical tools. They control and drive all the chemical reactions that together are the basis of life. Proteins also function as hormones, signal substances, antibodies and the building blocks of different tissues.   Proteins generally consist of 20 different amino acids, which can be described as life’s building blocks. In 2003, David Baker succeeded in using these blocks to design a new protein that was unlike any other protein. Since then, his research group has produced one imaginative protein creation after another, including proteins that can be used as pharmaceuticals, vaccines, nanomaterials and tiny sensors.   The second discovery concerns the prediction of protein structures. In proteins, amino acids are linked together in long strings that fold up to make a three-dimensional structure, which is decisive for the protein’s function. Since the 1970s, researchers had tried to predict protein structures from amino acid sequences, but this was notoriously difficult. However, four years ago, there was a stunning breakthrough.   In 2020, Demis Hassabis and John Jumper presented an AI model called AlphaFold2. With its help, they have been able to predict the structure of virtually all the 200 million proteins that researchers have identified. Since their breakthrough, AlphaFold2 has been used by more than two million people from 190 countries. Among a myriad of scientific applications, researchers can now better understand antibiotic resistance and create images of enzymes that can decompose plastic.   Life could not exist without proteins. That we can now predict protein structures and design our own proteins confers the greatest benefit to humankind. We are happy to announce the addition of a new biofungicide program, #BioFun-8, to our research and development #pipeline. Dr. Carlo Boutton, Chief Scientific Officer of Biotalys, said: “Fungal diseases continue to cause numerous challenges for growers – from creating stress on plants that stunts their growth and reduces yields, to devastating entire crops and infesting the soil with billions of spores. Our newest biocontrol program will focus on developing a biofungicide to control #Alternaria, one of the key fungal diseases in fruits, vegetables and specialty crops. As in all our pipeline programs, we aim to deliver a crop protection solution to tackle this pathogen with the efficacy and safety desired by growers at a competitive cost.” Read the full press release here: https://lnkd.in/g8zrwVJ

Great to see this article featuring commentary from Biotalys CEO Kevin Helash included in the Global Ag Tech Initiative Insight Series on Soil Health, along with this condensed version of the piece in Growing Produce.  #SoilHealth #SustainableFarming #Agribusiness #Agtech

🌱 How can we prioritize soil health while balancing economic realities in agriculture? Arizona Department of Agriculture CEO & EDD Paul Brierley shares insights on the growing challenges in Arizona’s agriculture sector, particularly with water scarcity and the economic pressures that impact soil health investments. While growers see the long-term benefits of improving soil health, securing short-term contracts and leases often limits the ability to invest in these practices. 💡 Watch the full discussion to explore how we can make sustainable practices pencil out in today's agricultural landscape. 🔗 Link: https://ow.ly/r45X50Trksg #SoilHealth #SustainableFarming #WaterConservation #Agribusiness #SoilScience What are your thoughts on balancing short-term gains with long-term sustainability?

Today is the International Day of #Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. Did you know that, around the world: ➡️ one-third of all food produced is lost or wasted. ➡️ ~14% of all food is lost between harvest and retail. This is especially true of fresh produce, which is highly perishable and sustains high levels of #foodloss and #foodwaste.  ➡️ more than 1 billion (!) ton of food is wasted in households, food services and retail annually. Biotalys is committed to developing novel #solutions that help protect crops against plant pests and diseases, curb food loss and improve accessible nutrition. Our ongoing work helps advance the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals of Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12) and Life on Land (SDG 15).
