🚨BREAKING: new report reveals plummeting migratory shorebird populations globally ⚠️📉 16 species have been reclassified to higher threat categories according to the latest update to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. These numbers reveal a highly concerning decline in populations of migratory shorebirds with potential causes including habitat loss and degradation, disturbance, hunting and climate change. Science shows the huge negative impact of declining species populations, with whole ecosystems and food chains being disrupted as a result. As birds migrate beyond borders, the new update highlights a need for more collaboration from governments without delay to reverse the losses of migratory birds. Shorebirds, often seen darting along beaches or feeding on mudflats, are a familiar sight all over the world. Coastal areas where many of these birds live also support millions of people by providing food, jobs, and storm protection. Protecting shorebirds is essential not just for the birds, but also for the coastal communities that depend on these habitats. We only have five more years of this defining decade. CBD COP16 is the moment to galvanise action to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030. Plummeting migratory bird populations signal that nature is in crisis. When we lose species, our future is compromised. Nature loss can be reversed but extinctions cannot. The EU wants to keep killing puffins. Earlier this year, the UK and Scottish Governments announced that industrial sandeel fishing will no longer be permitted in English and Scottish waters. Why? Because industrial sandeel fishing in the North Sea is starving Puffins and Kittiwakes to death. And the EU wants to keep it that way. they just filed a complaint against the UK ban. This critical conservation measure is being blocked to cater to a small but powerful commercial lobby of Danish sandeel trawlers. Head of UK Marine Policy RSPB. Chair Wildlife & Countryside LINK marine group. ENDs power list 2024.
What a great week spent in France with LPO France and the BirdLife Europe and Central Asia Marine Task Force. Learning, sharing and strategizing across 14 of the partners. Through these get togethers we share project work, challenges, successes and challenges, learning from each other's practical, policy, advocacy and communication skills. Our collective work covers fisheries, invasive species, protected sites, advancing marine science, policy and through the RSPB working alongside the BirdLife Europe and Central Asia secretariat we lead the strategic working on the delivery of nature positive offshore wind. Our wildlife is not limited by geographical boundaries and neither should we be. Always inspired after spending time with this awesome group of people. #strongertogether, #collaboration Tammy Davies, Helen McLachlan, Yann Rouxel, Manya Russo, Cyrielle Goldberg, Alexandra Caron-Strehlow

The EU Commissioner hearings are coming up, and nature must be at the heart of the discussions. Here are some of our burning questions to help put out the flames of our overheating planet. Without bold action to protect it, the EU’s future is at risk, so we want to see answers that promise: 🦉 No backtracking on environmental legislation 🦅 Better enforcement of existing laws 🦚 Adequate funding for nature #EUGreenDeal #EUPolitics #RestoreNature

Sweden, Finland, Estonia, and Latvia want to move cormorants to Annex II of the EU Birds Directive—basically, they want to kill birds for... eating fish. But human activities are the problem here, not birds. Instead of wasting resources on ineffective culls, we should focus on restoring coastal wetlands and marine ecosystems, reducing overfishing, and supporting sustainable fisheries that can coexist with wildlife. #RestoreNature #Agrifish #EUnaturepolitics

How to facilitate a bird-friendly🦅🦆⚡ energy transition? During the first #wingspan2024 conference in Brussels, industry, academia and civil society came together to discuss just this. We also had the opportunity to present the SafeLines4Birds project. In Belgium, Elia, Natagora and Natuurpunt are the project partners of this LIFE Programme creating a safer electricity grid and examining the most efficient approach. During the fieldtrip, participants visited the powerline in Noordschote, equipped with bird protection measures. The danger of this line has significantly been reduced by the installed equipment, but the discovery of 2 caracasses showed there is still work to be done. Our final stop was the nature reserve of the Blankaart, the first breeding location of white-tailed eagles in Belgium! They were very cooperative and we took the opportunity to explain the successes of nature restoration and Natuurpunt. Thanks to Ingrid Marchand, Manon Quetstroey, Olivia Geels and the whole teams for the organisation #natuurherstelwerkt #natuurinhethart #safelines4birds #solveclimateandbiodiversitycrisisinonego Renewables Grid Initiative, LPO France, Natuurpunt Studie, BirdLife International, BirdLife Europe and Central Asia, Noah Janssen, Stijn Ombelets, Mattias Bruynooghe, Robin Verachtert, Jean-Yves Paquet, @Dominique Verbelen
