Updates

  • 🌳 Following the European elections, discussions about the European Commission’s proposal to establish a common monitoring framework for resilient forests, the Forest Monitoring Law (FML), are gradually resuming. Member States are currently debating the proposal in the Agriculture and Fisheries Council. While some governments are concerned about the proposed law’s added value and scope, it’s important to emphasise why a common, harmonised, and comprehensive monitoring system is essential for addressing forest-related challenges. Some of the main benefits are: 1. Improve data collection and comparability  2. Support reporting requirements from other EU legislation 3. Encourage integrated forest planning 4. Technology to Ensure Cost-Effectiveness  5. Contribute to Transparent and Accessible Data Find out more about why an EU-wide framework is crucial for understanding our forests in our latest article 👉 https://lnkd.in/e4hPATkC 📸 by Lars Soerink

#BlueManifesto

Dialogue with civil society, industry, policymakers, and coastal communities is a key element to balancing nature, climate, and people at sea for this upcoming establishment of the new Ocean Pact. • ⚠️ ️The European Court of Auditors has just published its report assessing the 2023-2027 CAP Strategic Plans, revealing that while the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) aims for higher environmental and climate goals, the 2023-2027 national plans fall short. ⚠️ 🔍 Key Findings: 🔹 National CAP plans are not significantly greener compared to previous periods.   🔹 Green performance is difficult to measure, and depends on the quality of voluntary schemes and uptake by farmers  🔹 Some funding requirements were relaxed in response to farmer protests, raising concerns about environmental integrity. The Court of Auditor’s report confirms the findings of our own: Member States did not leverage the flexibility provided by the legal framework of the CAP and it is now up to them to create robust plans that address pressing environmental challenges and promote sustainability in agriculture. To actually fight the environmental and climate crises, we need a significantly larger budget dedicated to environmental schemes. It’s essential that CAP funding is not diverted to business-as-usual practices that harm both farmers and our planet. Moving forward, BirdLife will actively follow the post-2027 CAP discussions to make sure this becomes a priority. #nonaturenofood #farmerprotests2024 #CAP #commonagriculturepolicy

  • 🆘 Art destroys nature!? 😡 The UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve Urdaibai is 𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗺 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗺. The Basque and Spanish governments are pushing to extend the exhibition space of the Guggenheim and create two venues right at the heart of the Urdaibai Estuary. The Urdaibai Estuary is one of the most diverse natural landscapes in the Basque country and an important stop-over for migratory birds. Floodplains, wetlands, and adjacent forests all form a unique ecosystem with an abundance of life. Most of the area falls under the protection of the Natura 2000 Network and it is also a designated Special Protection Area for birds (SPA). Urdaibai is not only extremely important because of its biodiversity, but it is also part of the culture and heritage of the region. The inhabitants are strongly against the plans to expand the Guggenheim into the estuary! We need your support now to stop this madness. Art has been inspired by nature for centuries, how dare we destroy the mother of life and muse of inspiration!? Help SEO/BirdLife and raise your voice against 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲-𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗿.
