Brussels Beer Challenge

✨ Finding out about beer competitions at the Brussels Beer Challenge! ✨ This week, students from KU Leuven’s Postgraduate Program in Malting and Brewing Sciences had an incredible opportunity to dive into the heart of Belgium’s beer culture at the prestigious Brussels Beer Challenge. 🍻 So far this term they've witnessed some of the best brewing innovation and techniques, and learnt all about the science behind this, but here they got their first *taste* of the competitive world of beer judging. This experience allows our students to connect classroom knowledge with real-world industry standards, inspiring the next generation of brewers to reach new heights. This week I had the privilege to join the jury of the Brussels Beer Challenge, the most relevant international beer competition where 1700+ beers from all over the world are blind tasting by 100+ professionals. it looks cool, isn't it? Definitely it is but it's a hard job for several reasons: 🍺 who are we to judge the work done with love by the brewers? Thankfully, there are criteria to follow for each beer category and decisions are taken at the majority. And tasting comments are always provided to the brewers. 🍺 It is requested to taste 20+ beers from the same style. You need to stay focus on aroma/flavor subtleties to compare them properly. 🍺 3 small sips are a maximum to analyze a beer, rate the criteria and give a feedback. Even if the beer is excellent and you would go for a full glass, your mind must remain clear. And it's easier if you taste non-alcoholic beers than barrel-aged Imperial Stouts!😅 🍺 The first glass comes to your table at...9am!! Fortunately, the work was perfectly prepared by Thomas Costenoble, Luc De Raedemaeker and their team. And I was helped in my "duty" by Ithar da Costa, @jean-luc bodeux and Dirk Hayen Results will be presented during Horeca Expo in Gent mid-November. 🍻 Drink less but drink better! 🍻

Jureren is een eer. En heerlijk om te doen. Zeker in Brussel. Vandaag was het zover: de eerste ronde van de Brussels Beer Challenge 2024 ging van start! Brouwers zetten zich met hart en ziel in om mooie bieren te brouwen. Als ze de moeite nemen om hun bieren in sturen voor deze competitie is dat een blijk van vertrouwen. Daarom is het geweldig om in een internationaal team in drie dagen de eerste ronde van de Brussels Beer Challenge te mogen jureren. Met oog voor detail wordt elke bierstijl kritisch geproefd en beoordeeld. De bieren met de hoogste scores uit deze voorrondes verdienen een felbegeerde plek in de finale in Gent. Jureren is heerlijk werk. Kijken, ruiken, proeven. Met volle aandacht en concentratie. Snelheid houden. In flow komen. Als een degustieve meditatie. Daarna nabespreken met andere juryleden en conclusies trekken. Jureren is teamwork. Een prachtig vak. Voor mij is het ook een mooie gelegenheid om met vakliefhebbers drie dagen lang intensief op te trekken. Al hun ervaring en kunde is waanzinnig leerzaam en inspirerend. Begin november is de volgende en finale jury ronde. Prijsuitreiking is tijdens de Horeca Expo Gent op 18 november 2024.
