We are Europe's leading NGO coalition fighting dangerous climate change.

About us

Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe is Europe's largest coalition working on climate and energy issues. With over 200 member organisations in more than 40 European countries, representing over 44 million citizens, CAN Europe works to prevent dangerous climate change and promote sustainable climate and energy policy in Europe. The vision of CAN is a world actively striving towards and achieving the protection of the global climate in a manner that promotes equity and social justice between peoples, sustainable development of all communities, and protection of the global environment. CAN Europe empowers civil society organisations to influence the design and development of effective climate change policy in Europe, both in the European Union as well as in its Member States and in European countries outside the EU. CAN Europe is recognised as an established civil society voice in both EU policy and the UN climate negotiations. We work to influence decision-makers at the heart of Brussels while supporting our diverse network of members to campaign from grassroots up to governmental level in Members States. CAN Europe works on a broad range of issues including climate, energy and finance policies, to contribute to the zero carbon transition that should allow us to avoid dangerous climate change. We do that with a great team of experts in the CAN Europe secretariat as well as with hundreds of staff from our member organisations, that engage through working groups, mailing lists, conference calls and our bi-annual General Assemblies.

Making Europe faster, easier and fairer for all ✊ In our latest ☀ sunny short ☀ , Ismael Morales López of Fundación Renovables explains the monumental challenges faced by Commissioner-designate Teresa Ribera in delivering a clean, just and competitive transition if she is to be selected. However, under her direction, the EU has a major opportunity to drive forward the renewable energy transition and if Member States work together, Europe can become the first climate-neutral continent #TogetherFor100RE https://lnkd.in/e6AYb9EK

  • 📣 What’s up with the updated Polish NECP? 📣 Our local member Fundacja Instytut na rzecz Ekorozwoju comments on the document, that has been sent to public consultations, in the EURACTIV Poland and Gazeta.pl Key points: ↕️ The updated reduction targets are more ambitious than in the previous versions of the NECP, but they are still insufficient to achieve the climate goals necessary to stop global warming. 🗓️ Next to defining clear reduction targets, Poland should also work on concrete plans and prognoses of how to put them in place; ⚡ Poland should break free from fossil fuels and use the opportunity and transform its energy now, while it can still benefit from the EU's just transition mechanisms. These funds would support energy transformation and provide social acceptance in regions dependent on coal.

  • 👀 Our eyes are on the Commissioner Hearings kicking off next week! 📈 With the EU way off track to meet its 2030 climate goals, the proposed College of Commissioners must now signal that Europe is serious about a fossil-free future. 📢 Chiara Martinelli: "Failing to signal an increased ambition for 2030 and 2040 means failing to live up to the vision of the European Green Deal. We expect a clear message on this from Commissioner-Designate Wopke Hoekstra but also across the college, as a sign of collective vision and coherence on the priorities ahead of us." 📢 Sven Harmeling: "With climate-vulnerable communities around the world watching, the hearings should not be an echo chamber of empty rhetoric – we want to hear real plans of real action. The EU has a window in the next few years to pursue effective policies that harness the many co-benefits that ambitious climate action brings for people and the planet, including through a cleaner economy and industry with attached clear social and environmental conditionalities." 📢 Cornelia Maarfield: "The EU’s energy transition is gaining momentum, but not quick enough. Commissioner-designate Jørgensen cannot let it falter by committing to unproven and false solutions such as low-carbon hydrogen and nuclear." Read more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dyDcGgH2

  • 🤝 A RENOVATION WAVE THAT LEAVES NO ONE BEHIND 🤝 CAN Europe and ECODES (Fundación Ecología y Desarrollo) have published a new report exploring the link 🔗 between the Social Climate Plans and the National Building Renovation Plans including: 👉 The Challenges 👉 The Opportunities 👉 & Policy Recommendations Rolling out an ambitious and socially just renovation wave through correctly implementing the EU Building's directive #EPBD can lift millions out of energy poverty and decarbonise Europe's inefficient building stock, helping to #BuildBetterLives 🖊 Eva Brardinelli Javier Tobías González

  • 🌍 Just two weeks until #COP29! What’s at stake this year, and how can Europe take the lead on crucial climate issues? 💰 The EU and developed countries must #PayUp and end financial injustice! This means committing to an ambitious New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG), channelling at least $1 trillion in public grants to developing nations. 🦖 The era of fossil fuels has to be ended, once and for all. The EU must champion a global fair, fast, full and funded phase-out of fossil fuels. #EndFossilFuels 🛡️ Human rights, equity and safe operating space for civil society have to be at the core of #COP29 and beyond. Without inclusive participation, climate action becomes an elite exercise in power rather than a movement for the people.

  • ⚠️Promoting so-called low-carbon fuels risk locking us into more fossil gas use and undermining decarbonization goals! 📢 It is crucial that the EU Commission revises this Delegated Act to prioritise renewable energy-based solutions and avoid the risk of locking in inefficient infrastructure or creating stranded assets. 🔍 Read our full input to the stakeholder consultation on the Delegated Act on Low Carbon Fuels 🔗https://lnkd.in/dB5h8mVw

Director, Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe

📣 Today marks 3 years I joined Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe! I don't want to miss the opportunity to stop a moment and look back at our path so far: 👉 We brought our network together around a new Vision & Strategy "Changemaking in Times of Crisis" with #ClimateAction and #SocialJustice at its core! More can be found here below. 👉 We didn't stop one minute to put pressure on #EUClimateAmbition through the finalisation of the "fit for 55" legislative package and calling for the improvement and implementation of the European Green Deal. Also navigating challenging times such as the Russian war against Ukraine, the energy prices crisis, the phase out of the pandemic and increasing far right across the continent. 👉 We joined forces with CSOs to campaign around the recent #EuropeanParliamentElections2024 and to ensure our call for a fossil free, socially just and climate neutral EU is loud and clear! 👉 We proudly sticked together with our international network to scale up pressure at international level for an operating Loss&Damage Fund (#COP27), a full, fair, fast phase out from fossil fuels (#COP28), for a concrete scale up of climate finance from rich to developing countries (#COP29) and the needed reform of the entire financial system. And to remind everyone out there that there is no climate justice without #HumanRights! The world today doesn't seem to give us encouraging signals, with climate impacts rising, inequalities increasing, violence and wars but here we are to continue this mission and Changing the Climate Story from Despair to Possibility! And this we can only do TOGETHER! Thanks to the amazing ✨ CAN Europe team ✨ for the commitment and passion and to all the people I met on this journey and helped, supported me on this adventure! • Europe’s Climate Ambition Falling Short 🚨 CAN Europe’s updated NECP Tracker reveals alarming gaps between national climate commitments and the action needed to meet the EU’s 2030 climate and energy targets. The level of climate ambition is still insufficient not only to meet the Paris Agreement commitments, but also to reach the EU 2030 climate and energy objectives, which would be in breach of the European Climate Law. 🔑 Key findings: ⚠️ Insufficient Ambition: Despite some progress, most national plans lack the ambition needed to meet 2030 targets or align with the Paris Agreement. This puts the EU at risk of breaching its own European Climate Law. 📉 Implementation Delays: Member States are struggling to reduce emissions in key sectors like transport, agriculture, and waste. Renewable energy uptake and energy efficiency improvements are also lagging. 🕑 Significant Delays: Only 13 out of 27 countries have submitted their final NECPs, raising concerns about the ability to assess real climate ambition for the next critical years. 🔍 Data Transparency Issues: Many NECPs lack clear, consistent data, making it difficult to monitor and assess their credibility. 🌱 Country-specific Highlights: 🇧🇪 Belgium and 🇭🇷 Croatia: Insufficient ambition in draft NECPs to meet 2030 targets. 🇩🇪 Germany: More ambitious targets but still struggling in key areas like land use. 🇫🇷 France: Progress in some areas but remains off-track for renewable energy. 🇪🇸 Spain: The exception—pairing its emissions targets with ambitious, credible policies. 🚨 Urgent Action Needed: To meet 2030 climate targets and secure a sustainable future, Member States must drastically increase ambition and back up their targets with real action. https://lnkd.in/eq26hzkn #TogetherFor1point5

  • Dear EU Heads of States and Governments, Here is our letter on #CleanIndustrialDeal ahead of the European Council meeting later this week. We want an industrial deal that: 🔝 Coordinates the green industrial strategy at the EU level 💫 Makes sure it is not all about corporate welfare but includes people, the planet & civil society in its genesis and execution 🌱 Puts climate ambition as the guiding principle and cements on the #EuropeanGreenDeal 🔄 Boosts competitiveness by doing more with less energy and resources — which creates new good jobs 🧑🤝🧑 Dares to invest in a sustainable industrial future but comes with strings attached for companies receiving support ⛔ Does not rollback existing environmental and social legislation ❌ Avoids false solutions, such as so-called "low-carbon gases" and Carbon Capture and Storage 🌏 Does not come at the expense of the Global South
