About us

Catalonia has institutional representation in Brussels since 1986. Mission of the Delegation of the Government of Catalonia to the EU: - Contributing to the construction of the European project. - Sharing Catalonia’s interests and best practices with EU institutions, networks, regions and other key stakeholders. - Cooperating and participating in the decision-making process of the EU, collecting information about the legislative initiatives, actions and programs with an impact on the competences or interests of the Government of Catalonia. - Promoting the participation of the Government of Catalonia and other Catalan entities to the EU. - Facilitating the bilateral relationships with Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxemburg (Benelux). The representative of the Government of Catalonia to the EU is Meritxell Serret i Aleu. The Espai Catalunya Europa is part of the Delegation and hosts events and exhibitions to contribute on the EU debate and defend the Catalan interests. Three agencies of the Catalan government that work in the Benelux are also located at the Delegation: ACCIÓ (Catalonia Trade & Investment), Catalan Arts and the Catalan Tourist Board.

  • Minister Jaume Duch Guillot defended during the celebration of the National Day of Catalonia in Brussels that "Catalonia must look forward, anchoring Europe as a space of reference and belonging." 💬 In his first public intervention as a minister of the Government of Catalonia, he also emphasized that Catalonia wants to "be a key player" in the decision-making processes of the new European political cycle. 📌 The institutional event took place at the Delegation of the Government of Catalonia to the European Union on the occasion of the National Day of Catalonia #Diada2024, where Minister Duch also celebrated the festive day with the Catalan community based in Brussels. 🎶 During the reception—organized by the Delegation—the singer-songwriter duo Alosa performed, and Catalan products were sampled. Key points of our position include: 🔹 Intersectional Directive: Advocating for the EU to prioritize an intersectional, horizontal Directive on Equal Treatment and Non-Discrimination, ensuring all individuals are protected from discrimination across all axes. 🔹 Support for EU Strategies: Welcoming and urging the renewal of the Anti-Racism Action Plan, LGBTIQ Equality Strategy, and Gender Equality Strategy, with sufficient resources and inclusive participation. 🔹Regional Role: Emphasizing the importance of regional and local authorities in implementing and guaranteeing equal treatment, given their proximity to citizens. 🔹 Concerns on Regression: Expressing concern over the rollback of rights in some Member States and calling for robust EU measures to uphold non-discrimination standards. 🔹 Tackling Hate Speech: Advocating for the inclusion of hate speech and hate crimes in the list of European crimes, ensuring comprehensive protection. 🔹 Recognition of LGBTI+ Rights: Urging EU institutions to enforce the recognition of same-sex marriages and parentage across all Member States.   • 🌍 Progress in Global Plastic Pollution Treaty Initiative 🌊 The international coalition advocating for a global treaty to end plastic pollution—led by the Government of Catalonia, the Government of Quebec, and the Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) network—has now surpassed 50 signatories from every corner of the globe! 🌎 This coalition was launched to amplify the voice of local and regional governments in treaty negotiations, aiming for a unified, ambitious approach to tackle plastic pollution. Since its inception, it has gained support from diverse regions and cities, including: - New signatories: Imbabura (Ecuador), São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Chefchaouen (Morocco), Nansana (Uganda), Seongnam City (South Korea), Turku (Finland), Cape Coast (Ghana), and Medellín (Colombia). - Existing members: Montreal (Canada), San José (Costa Rica), Guimarães (Portugal), Jujuy (Argentina), and many more. The coalition is preparing for the next negotiation round (INC-5) in Busan, South Korea, scheduled for November 2024.
