We fund research & innovation projects advancing circular bio-based industries in Europe under EU’s Horizon Europe
About us
The Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) is a €2 billion partnership between the European Union and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) that funds projects advancing competitive circular bio-based industries in Europe. CBE JU is operating under the rules of Horizon Europe, the EU’s research and innovation programme, for the 2021-2031 period. The partnership is building on the success of its predecessor, the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU), while addressing the current challenges facing the industry. The CBE JU is the legal and universal successor of BBI JU in respect of all contracts, grant agreements and liabilities. The CBE JU’s objectives are ensuring a high level of bio-based industrial systems’ environmental performance, accelerating the development and market deployment of bio-based innovative solutions. CBE JU organises yearly calls for proposals supporting research and innovation, de-risking investments, addressing market challenges, placing sustainability at the heart of the projects, strengthening the collaboration of all bioeconomy actors and engaging with stakeholders along bio-based value chains.

We are proud to take part in the #BIOKET2025! Yesterday, CBE JU Executive Director Nicoló Giacomuzzi-Moore took the stage during the opening session, emphasizing the crucial role of the bio-based industry in Europe’s sustainable future: "Europe has a large window of opportunity to become the global hub for biotech investment and growth. To seize it, we must ensure a regulatory framework that is fit for purpose, improve access to finance, and continue supporting scale-ups. These are the key pillars of success." We were also delighted to welcome bioeconomy leaders to the CBE JU stand, where Virginia Puzzolo and Nicolò Giacomuzzi-Moore with: 🍃 Marie-Sophie Lesne, Vice-President of Hauts-de-France, in charge of bioeconomy. 🍃Philippe Mangin, Vice-President of Grand-Est, in charge of bioeconomy. 🍃Michel Mangion, President of Bioeconomy For Change. 📍 Join us at the stand 40! Meet CBE JU Project Officers Dieter Brigitta and Oliver Zobell to explore upcoming CBE JU 2025 funding opportunities and discuss how we can support your bio-based innovations. #CBEJU #BIOKET2025 #Bioeconomy #SustainableFuture

How do we replace oil in our industries? The answer is here! The CBE JU-funded #PEFerence biorefinery has just received its first truck of organic feedstock: purified crop residues. This marks a significant step towards sustainable innovation in biorefining. The resulting bio-based material, PEF, offers a greener alternative, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 33% compared to traditional PET. Check out the journey of a major breakthrough in this video 👇

How can we contribute to a more sustainable future through plastic upcycling? The CBE JU-funded Glaukos project’s research published in the Nature magazine explores an innovative method for upcycling polyamides by using chemical hydrolysis in combination with engineered Pseudomonas putida. This approach opens new possibilities for breaking down waste plastics into valuable compounds, promoting a circular economy. By leveraging microbial engineering and green chemistry, we can reduce environmental pollution and develop sustainable solutions for plastic waste management. #CBEresearch Read the full article here 👇

The CBE JU-funded BIORING project, alongside with SuperBark, hosted the workshop "Anticipatory LCA to Promote Informed Decision-making in Bio-based Product Development" last December. The workshop focused on the challenges of providing early feedback and guidance when Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) are low, and data is scarce. Over 60 participants from various European projects shared their precious insights. 🎥 Missed the event?
