Europe stands at a crossroads in its transition to clean mobility. The EU industry is at a pivotal moment, facing major challenges: Chinese and US competition, lack of public investment in critical equipment, the urgency of climate action and insufficient cooperation between big corporates, SMEs, and investors. As I recalled yesterday in the European Parliament, any rollback on our Green Deal targets, as some political forces are already calling for, would lead to our industrial decline and threaten our continent's sovereignty. ➡️ To further nurture the EU debate on those questions, I am happy to 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 that I am co-organizing with AVERE - The European Association for Electromobility and ChargeUp Europe, this 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟰, 𝗮𝘁 𝟭𝟳:𝟯𝟬, 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. ➡️ Register here: https://lnkd.in/dmyGUAiq

📢 We support the call to maintain the distribution grid at the centre of the EU agenda! ChargeUp Europe is one of the signatories of EU DSO Entity’s joint statement on the key role of distribution grids for a competitive, green and resilient Europe. In particular, we call to: ➡️ Align EU financing instruments with net-zero targets and DSOs’ needs ➡️ Introduce a grid mainstreaming approach to ensure that grid expansion doesn't lag behind. As the #1 bottleneck to the rapid and widespread rollout of #EVcharging infrastructure across Europe, strengthening grid infrastructure is a core priority of ChargeUp Europe. Policymakers should treat it as such! Today the European Parliament will #debate about the ‘crisis’ in the #automotive sector. 🛑Except this is not a crisis. The challenges facing Europe's #car industry are not indicative of an industry-wide crisis. Crucially, 2024 car market conditions are not representative 1️⃣The #EV market has slowed due to gaps between #CO2 targets, this is temporary and EV sales will ramp up in 2025 with the new targets (20%-24% EV). Actually, electric car production is already picking up in Germany and reached an all time high - 38% (as it was shown by auto expert Matthias Schmidt: https://lnkd.in/e-DkGG7S). This gives a forward-looking indication about carmakers placing a strong focus on EVs. 2️⃣Meanwhile, after years of multi-billion #profits (130 billions in just two years), some carmakers could face lower profits in 2024. But the Financial Times expects all carmakers to achieve at least 5% profit margins in 2024, not that bad for a crisis. https://lnkd.in/eD2yW4_r ❗Decision makers must not fall for the call to review the car CO2 targets in 2025 instead of 2026. ➡️Calls to review the 2035 zero-emission car target in 2025 are premature. The regulation was just approved in 2023, and affordable EV models are only now being introduced.  ➡️Reviewing too early disrupts industry planning and delays investments.  ➡️The scheduled 2026 review provides a better timeline for a proper assessment of the market’s progress.  ➡️Instead of revisiting settled rules, the priority should be to focus on a comprehensive green automotive strategy for Europe. The industry is not in crisis - it's in transition.

🚗❗ Today in Strasbourg, MEPs discussed the automotive “crisis”. Let’s look at a very different version of the story. Looking back on our 2023 State of the Industry report, on average, the #EVcharging industry will require about 14,750 new positions per year until 2030. That means more than 118,000 jobs created. ✅ Although we’ve seen a slowdown in #EV sales in Europe this year, this doesn't change the direction of travel. This bump in the road is temporary in nature, driven by slowdown in select markets. Exempting the German market, EV sales grew by 9% in H12024. 📈 Need more evidence that we’re moving in the right direction? Stay tuned for next week’s release of fresh macroeconomic data on the EV charging industry. 💡 ChargeUp Europe’s Policy Director, Gabrielė Šimakauskaitė, commented on the debate: “Today's debate was timely and necessary but at the same time, the EU must stay focused on what is at stake - industry competitiveness on the global stage. The only way to ensure that the EU can continue to compete with other global players is to maintain legal certainty and the agreed targets and support the European industry in this transition period. We are happy to see that this message has transpired in the European Parliament and the European Commission as well and we look forward to continuing the dialogue and supporting the solutions for the future of electrified road transport and competitive European industry!" E-mobility is not in crisis mode. Sticking to the agreed targets will make sure it stays that way.

📈 ChargeUp Europe Board: the EV outlook today 📈 The Board of ChargeUp Europe, the voice of the EV charging infrastructure industry, met on October 1, and discussed the EV outlook. The Board is of the view that: ⚡ The current slowdown in EV sales in Europe is a bump in the road and does not change the direction of travel. This bump is temporary in nature, driven by slowdown in select markets.  Exempting the German market, EV sales grew by 9% in H12024. ⚡ The EV charging industry continues to invest heavily in expanding both public and private charging infrastructure. We anticipate that EV charging infrastructure deployment will outpace EV uptake in 2024. ⚡ Electric drivetrains are the superior technology and highly energy efficient. There is no better technology to provide an excellent automotive experience and reduce emissions in the light duty vehicle parc.  ⚡ Policy stability and predictability drives investments decisions. Legal certainty, including the 2035 phaseout of tailpipe emissions, is critical and must be preserved. ⚡ The answer to the current sales slump is not to shield Europe from competition, but to increase volumes. Measures that support improved EV volumes – together with the development of a broader offer of makes and models of EVs at different price points to serve more, varied customers - will allow EU carmakers to scale, strengthening them against their foreign competitors. ⚡ E-mobility is an economic opportunity for Europe. In 2023, already 50 000 people were working in the EV charging sector alone, up from 13 000 in 2019 – and more jobs will be created in the future. ChargeUp Europe will unveil additional macroeconomic data on 15/10 showing the value and job creation in the sector for the next decade. ⚡ Transport electrification remains a dynamic and innovative sector. Our companies are full of people solving interesting puzzles and improving customer experience. The electrified transportation system is taking shape in front of our eyes, and we’re excited to keep working on it. Our Q3 Board meeting in Lisbon had everything. Brazilian art and dinner with a Minister. A Tuk Tuk ride and irresistible Portuguese hospitality. The past and the future, with a former coal plant visit and a smart charging demo. Sun and fun, but of course deeper discussions, from how the EV charging infrastructure sector continues to invest in expanding networks to why EVs are the best technology. We’ll continue to be the “can” voice, coordinating outreach with our members, and push for measures that lead to higher volumes of EVs. Deepest, warmest thanks to EDP Portugal for a high-quality programme and exceptional hosting – that’s one for the books!
