CLEPA, the European Association of Automotive Suppliers, represents over 3,000 companies supplying state-of-the-art components and innovative technology for safe, smart and sustainable mobility, investing over 30 billion euros yearly in research and development. Automotive suppliers in Europe employ overall nearly five million people across the continent. CLEPA brings together over 120 global suppliers of car parts, systems and modules and more than 20 national trade associations and European sector associations. CLEPA is the voice of the EU automotive supply industry linking the sector to policy makers.

  • 🔴Worst job losses in the automotive supply industry since the pandemic:    CLEPA research and analysis projects that roughly 86,000 jobs have been lost in the sector since 2020.   • 📢 The persistent financial and structural difficulties raise urgent questions about Europe’s capacity to remain competitive in the global automotive landscape.    The latest #CLEPADataDigest reveals that the automotive supply industry is struggling with lower production volumes, suppressed profitability as well as the pressing need to invest in the green and digital transition. 🔵 Despite some positive developments, including a modest recovery in the trade surplus due to falling battery imports, the industry’s ability to fund and execute the necessary investments for a successful transition is waning.  🔵 In the first half of 2024, the EU accounted for only 14.6% of global value creation, down from 16.5% in 2019    👉 Find out more about the health of the auto supply industry here:  https://lnkd.in/etng6tep   #AutomotiveSuppliers

    I have a confession to make, I was too optimistic, but it does not need to stay this way. Less than 1/5 of the jobs we expected to be created within the electric vehicle (EV) supply chain by now, have in reality materialised. Main culprit: falling demand, doubting customers and stagnating production volumes. With over 350 battery electric models on the EU market today, powered by latest technologies and billions in investments by automotive suppliers, the technology is there. The question is whether policy makers will do what it takes to provide the enabling conditions. We have seen a lot of regulatory provisions, some better than others, but in a market economy nothing beats demand. Setting targets is not enough, we need a policy framework that fosters demand for green innovations. That way we can we make sure that net zero technologies and latest innovations (e.g. in battery, e-axle, power electronics, thermal management or hydrogen storage) are indeed also manufactured in Europe. Because economic headwinds, do not change the fact that climate change requires us to transform our economy at pace. Europe will require a robust automotive industry to drive this transformation, along with the numerous manufacturing sectors that depend on it, for instance in terms of the sector's demand for green steel & aluminium and battery materials.     Back again in Geneva for the 128th session of UNECE GRSG (Working Party on General Safety). ✅ It was agreed to extend the mandate of the Informal Working Group on awareness of Vulnerable Road Users proximity in low-speed manoeuvres (VRU-Proxi) to consider potential improvements and to develop a draft regulatory proposal that will enhance the driver's ability to detect vulnerable road users (VRU). 🚙🚌🚛🏍️The Task Force on Automated Vehicle Categorisation (TF-AVC) presented its proposal to amend the Consolidated Resolution on the Construction of Vehicles (R.E.3) and the Special Resolution S.R.1 to include sub-categories covering automated vehicles. 🚦At the start of the week, CLEPA - European Association of Automotive Suppliers also attended the kick-off meeting of the Informal Working Group on Driver Drowsiness and Distraction Warning Systems (IWG DDADWS). It was agreed to develop 2 separate regulations, one for drowsiness and one for distraction. The original series will be delivered by October 2025 and will be closely aligned with the existing EU regulations. By October 2026, it is expected to complete a first amendment to improve the performance requirements. ✔️CLEPA remains committed to advanced vehicle safety technologies and will continue supporting future UN regulations, driving the industry toward a safer and smarter mobility.     A big thanks to the Webasto Group, Dr. Stephan Müller von Kralik and Jan Henning Mehlfeldt for hosting the CLEPA - European Association of Automotive Suppliers Trade Working Group. As one of the top-100 suppliers worldwide, Webasto showcases the innovative power of our industry. A tour through the Utting plant demonstrated the sector's commitment to transform existing facilities and industrialise new technologies and latest manufacturing innovations here in Europe. The Trade WG discussed how the incoming European Commission can help maintain the openness of the trading system and strengthen supply chains. The automotive industry is and will need to stay a global industry. European industry can be strong if the EU Single Market remains integrated with other trading blocks; smarter regulation and more emphasis on the conclusion and ratification of trade agreements (e.g. EU-Mercosur) will need to support this. Our trade and customs experts stand ready to advise policymakers with recommendations to improve the coherence of EU regulations, such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and the increasing number of legal Due Diligence requirements.   • The automotive supply industry plays a crucial role in Europe's #competitiveness, yet two-thirds of suppliers, especially SMEs, face challenges with profitability. Streamlining financing, reducing administrative burdens, and tackling high energy costs are critical to supporting the industry’s future. 💡 To regain the EU’s competitive edge, the European Commission should enhance funding for the Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform and expand the Innovation and Just Transition Fund. 🌍 A proactive trade agenda focused on WTO rules is also essential for building resilient supply chains. 👷♂️ A competitive industry depends on a skilled workforce.     I had the pleasure to participate in the 20th session of UNECE GRVA (Working Party on Automated/Autonomous and Connected Vehicles) in Geneva with a large delegation of CLEPA - European Association of Automotive Suppliers.   CLEPA presented the status of work to include e-trailers in R13 and a proposal for park lock device in R13 and R13-H.   GRVA adopted an amendment proposal to R171 for DCAS (Dynamic Control Assistance Systems) including hands-off/eyes-on and system-initiated manoeuvres. Updated ADS (Automated Driving Systems) guidelines and interpretation document for R156 were also adopted. Another main achievement is the introduction of virtual testing in R152 for AEBS.   There were also interesting exchanges on the ongoing work on ACPE (Acceleration Control for Pedal Error) and ELKS (Emergency Lane Keeping System), on the ADS scenarios, on the amendment of the existing regulations to make them fit for ADS and on the new ADS vehicles categories.   It was a busy week with remarkable results.
