Reliable sunscreen product testing is extremely important for the substantiation of sunscreen efficacy claims. Sunscreen efficacy claims help consumers choose the right sunscreen product for them and therefore adequately protect themselves against the sun. Over the past 30 years, Cosmetics Europe (former COLIPA) has been at the forefront of developing reliable test methods for the measurements of various aspects of sun protection products, including Sun Protection Factor (SPF) test methods. Developed by Cosmetics Europe and its member experts, the Double Plate Method (DPM) is an SPF test method which is alternative to the current international standard (ISO 24444:2019) and has been recently advanced to the final draft stage of the ISO process. This week Cosmetics Europe and some of its members attended the first Plenary Session of the new European Parliament in Strasbourg in which MEPs re-elected Ursula von der Leyen as President of the European Commission. NEWS: Cosmetics Europe - The Personal Care Association and EFfCI - The European Federation for Cosmetic Ingredients have just released the updated version of a joint guidance document on the EU Microplastics Restriction to help the cosmetics industry understand the key elements of the restriction. The updated document includes clarifications on as well as answers to questions that have arisen since the first publication of the guidance in February 2024. *Please note, the guidance document will continue to be updated in the light of future developments. Last month, in the context of the continuing development of International Standards for sun protection factor (SPF) test methods, the International Standard Organisation (ISO) Sun Protection Working Group (ISO/TC 217/WG 7) unanimously recommended that two methods – the In Vitro Double Plate Method (DPM) and Hybrid Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (HDRS) – be advanced to the Final Draft stage of the ISO development process. During this final approval stage, the drafts of the DPM and HDRS methods will be circulated to all ISO members for an 8-week vote, starting later this month. If approved by a two-thirds majority of members, the ISO Central Secretariat will recognise and publish the methods as official international standards by the beginning of 2025, at the earliest. Manufacturers and other test laboratories will then be able to test the efficacy of sunscreen products using these internationally-recognised Standards. Cosmetics Europe is delighted to see these alternative SPF test methods in the final stages of ISO publication and is particularly proud of the DPM, as it has been developed by experts from the association and its members. The DPM is a fully in vitro method. The method is robust, has high reproducibility and provides consequent reliable data which enables cost-effective and high throughput testing. The method’s key attributes and its advancement to the final Draft Stage of the ISO development process represent a major scientific advancement in sun protection.
