Drowning in rules, losing competitiveness. What's happening in Europe? An avalanche of regulations and policies is slowing innovation and pushing businesses to markets with fewer regulatory demands. At yesterday's Financial Times Live event in Brussels, policymakers and business leaders debated a pressing question: 💡 Can Europe cut red tape before its competitiveness is lost? With compliance costs rising, innovation dropping, and investment shifting elsewhere, the challenge isn’t just how much regulation exists—but how it’s designed. Some argue for drastic cuts, while others call for a smarter, innovation-friendly approach. 👉 Is Europe overregulating—or just regulating the wrong way? If we want Europe to stay competitive, we need a complete shift. From complexity to clarity. From rigidity to adaptability. From top-down control to system innovation. ⚠️ The next 12 months are critical. 2025 has been called Europe’s “solar year.” It could be our last real chance to future-proof European competitiveness before the window closes. When I was presented with this reCAPTCHA, a free Google service, I laughed. Then, I didn’t. How could it get this so wrong? Classic AI fail? A wheelchair mistaken for a bicycle? This isn’t just a simple AI error—it’s a metaphor for a much bigger problem. Systems—whether technological or corporate—often misclassify, overlook, and erase people. And right now, we’re seeing that happen in real-time as businesses, still mainly in the US, roll back their DE&I commitments. #Diversity, #equity, and #inclusion are not about ticking boxes. They’re about ensuring that every person is seen, valued, and empowered. In the workplace, that means recognising diverse talents, breaking down systemic biases, and building environments where everyone, regardless of gender, background, or ability, can contribute meaningfully. At CSR Europe ’s European Sustainable Industry Summit (24-25 June in Brussels), we’re dedicating Day 2 to the value of DE&I in the workplace. Because inclusion is not just good ethics—it’s good business. Companies that embrace diversity drive innovation, resilience, and long-term growth. But as political tides shift, some are deprioritising inclusion, sending the wrong message, behaving as if equity is negotiable. It’s not. And just like this reCAPTCHA, they’re sending the wrong message. Because when we misclassify people, we don’t just fail to recognize them—we fail them entirely. Let’s not let that happen. Join the conversation at #EUSIS2025. Have you noticed this shift in your workplace? Or better, do you have examples that support the claim that it's good business? Share it and let’s talk. 👇 Please share your 🩷 by liking this post. ♻️ Share this post to engage others. #DEI #Leadership

𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗨 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 On March 4, 2024, CSR Europe gathered 40+ Chief Sustainability Officers (CSOs), trade associations, and European Commission representatives to exchange insights on the Omnibus Simplification Package and Clean Industrial Deal, the key policies shaping EU sustainability and competitiveness. 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗔 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 –The sustainability debate has become too divided—either for or against regulation. This “they/us” mindset does not serve the larger goal: a resilient, competitive, and prosperous Europe. This meeting focused on practice-based solutions that create real value for both business and society. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 - Regulation must move from theory to workable implementation, ensuring businesses can focus on impact, not just compliance. Incentives and enforcement must go hand in hand—early adopters should be rewarded, while policies must remain ambitious to drive systemic change. 𝗖𝗦𝗥𝗗 𝗨𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆 & 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 – Different implementation speeds, unclear thresholds, and inconsistent enforcement leave businesses in limbo. Instead of investing in sustainability innovation, companies spend heavily on consultants and compliance costs to minimize risk. 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 – Sustainability should boost business, not hinder it. That means: ✔️ Aligning sustainability with competitiveness so European companies lead in innovation. ✔️ Reducing bureaucracy so companies focus on impact, not excessive reporting. ✔️ Ensuring long-term stability so businesses can plan and invest confidently. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁?– The roundtable discussions produced concrete recommendations for pragmatic implementation, including: ✅ Standardized assurance criteria to cut unnecessary costs. ✅ Stronger links between reporting and business benefits to support investor confidence and innovation. ✅ Proactive EU enforcement guidance for fair, consistent application across member states. ✅ Public procurement as a sustainability driver, rewarding companies committed to responsible business. 𝗔 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴’𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸! 𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻! – What do you think? What are your biggest challenges in implementing sustainability policies? Share your thoughts in the comments—𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁!
