Do you know “the law of fives” ? In 1984, W. R. De Sitter (TU/e) introduced “the law of fives” at the CEB-RILEM Workshop on Durability of Concrete Structures (CEB bulletin 152). Almost 40 years ago the rule of thumb was explained as follows: The life of a concrete structure, with respect to durability, can be divided into 2 main phases: - Phase 1: Corrosion initiation processes are under way, but propagation of damage has not yet begun (here you go from €1 to €5 and it ends with €25) - Phase 2: Propagation of corrosion advances, with extensive damage manifesting (in this phase you go from €25 to €125 to ... a sudden collapse?) DIMCOST offers you a powerful calculation tool for estimation the length of the initiation phase (1). As a result, you can save a lot of time and money by examining a concrete element before it shows any signs of corrosion.
