Today is World RLS Day! RLS patient organisations around the world are using this day to educate the public about RLS/WED. Although many people are affected by RLS/WED, there is still a lack of knowledge about the disease. Surveys have shown that people often suffer from symptoms for many years before being diagnosed. Finding a competent doctor is often difficult and time-consuming because many medical professionals are unfamiliar with the disease. There is also a lack of knowledge about the different approved treatments and their side effects, such as augmentation. RLS/WED patients often feel misunderstood and suffer from the stigma of the disease. It is therefore important to educate the general public about all aspects of the disease. EARLS and its national patient organisations are committed to this. Not only on World RLS Day, but throughout the year, we are available to people with RLS and their families, we inform the public, doctors, scientists and healthcare providers, and we support innovative RLS research projects. In this way, we work together to provide direct support to many people affected by RLS. Like adults, children with RLS tend to relieve their symptoms by moving their legs. Parents or healthcare providers often mistakenly label the child's discomfort as "growing pains". In the classroom, attempts to relieve the discomfort of RLS may be interpreted as inattentiveness, hyperactivity or disruptive behaviour. Did you know that RLS has a long history? The symptoms were first described by the English physician Sir Thomas Willis in 1685, and in 1945 the Swedish physician Karl-Axel Ekbom gave a detailed description of the disease. RLS is therefore known as Willis-Ekbom disease. Since then, our understanding of the disease has improved considerably. RLS is usually a chronic, lifelong disease with periods of worsening and improvement. RLS has a strong hereditary component. The first symptoms can appear in childhood. Early-onset forms are often associated with a more severe course of the disease. In the general population, about 5-10% of adults are affected, with the incidence increasing with age. Women are about twice as likely to be affected as men. RLS occurs in about 20-30% of pregnant women, especially in the third trimester. It affects 2-4% of children, 10-12% of middle-aged adults and up to 19% of people over the age of 65.
