🙌 Immensely grateful to former 🇮🇹 PM Enrico Letta for accepting to deliver the keynote address at our collective #ResearchMatters Brussels advocacy event + for wholeheartedly supporting our campaign. I personally particularly enjoyed the balanced speech about horizontality vs verticality of EU action.
➡️Key messages:
🔸”The Research Matters Campaign that your fantastic coalition of associations launched is exactly what we need. I am a great #supporter of it.
🔸The obstacles are at #national level. It is of utmost importance to advocate national governments: if they feel the pressure form the bottom, we can #makethedifference!
🔸The Report “Much more than a Market” succceeded in creating general awareness in the 🇪🇺 public opinion that it is crucial, for the #futureofEurope, to relaunch #Innovation, #Research and #Knowledge.
🔸It is about time to create #bridges between the R&I and #financial worlds, issues & actors as they are usually totally separated at EU level.
🔸We need extra #funding, but everything will be very complicated if we are not able to change the #paradigm of the EU financial budget (#MFF).
🔸There is no agreement among EU member states on a new #NextGenerationEU although it would be crucial to have such agreement - we therefore need to find a compromise on a large investment plan mixing public & private funding. Otherwise the #GreenDeal will be a political & societal backlash.
🔸The flagship idea of the #FifthFreedom can serve today as an ‘#icebreaker’ and ‘door-opener’ to mobilize energies and help spread - and not only scale - R&I across ALL countries & regions of 🇪🇺.
🔸Pursuing further this bottom-up collective effort and work in progress, creating momentum and spreading achievements #everywhereinEurope, is the most important goal. That works, I see this #momentum happening now.
🔸I attach great importance to the way in which the concrete #solutions that I put forward in the report can be successfully #implemented”.
🙏 Many thanks to our excellent panelists Enrico Letta, Maria Leptin (European Research Council (ERC)), Christian Ehler (European Parliament), and Pascal Metivier (European Round Table for Industry - ERT), and our dynamic moderator Charlotte Van Velthoven-Geerdink, for an insightful & engaging debate.
