We are excited to share that last week, our colleagues Aniruddh Sridhar from Elia Grid International and Julie Van Steen from Elia Group, participated in the Resource Adequacy Workshop, organized by the United States Energy Association (USEA) with support from the United States Agency For International Development (USAID), in Vienna, Austria as part of the Just and Secure Energy Transition (JSET) program. Aniruddh shared insights on Elia's approach to Resource Adequacy, contributing to the vital discourse on ensuring reliable power supply amidst the shift to cleaner energy. Adding a unique perspective to the dialogue, Julie concentrated on the Capacity Remuneration Mechanism in Belgium. She offered a detailed overview of the status quo and provided insights into the future outlook, including the ongoing updates to the mechanism. The event brought together industry experts, TSOs and regulators from South Eastern Europe and the West Balkans, emphasizing the importance of innovation, collaboration, and compliance. We are eager to continue our active participation in these critical discussions, valuing the collaboration and shared learning they foster.

📣The results of Elia’s summer outlook are out – and, given that there is a risk that Belgium will produce a surplus of electricity this summer, our experts are calling on market parties to be vigilant❗. 🌞Since 2023, there has been a huge number of solar panels installed across Belgium: forecasts have shown that the country is on course to have 10 GW of installed solar panel capacity by July. This, alongside the high level of availability of the country’s nuclear fleet, means that the country may be at risk of producing too much electricity at certain times (particularly on summer weekends, when electricity consumption is lower). In turn, this will increase the need for Belgium to export electricity to its neighbours. However, if both Belgium and its neighbours produce electricity surpluses, the frequency of the system may be increased – a situation which must be avoided, given the impact this will have across the whole of the European system. ⚖Elia primarily relies on market parties – known as balancing responsible parties – to maintain the balance between supply and demand across its grid. It provides them with the information they need to prepare to adjust the levels of demand and supply across their areas of responsibility. This information includes Elia’s summer outlook, which this year is alerting market parties to stay attentive to how the situation unfolds over the next few months. In the long run, however, given that increasing amounts of renewables are being integrated into the system, unlocking enough flexibility from across the system to deal with moments of peak production and consumption is key📈. 👉 Find out more in our latest press release: https://lnkd.in/etz9Abmv #guardiansofthegrid #renewables #decarbonisation #netzero #electricitygrid #electricity #solarpower #solarenery #solar panels

Our colleagues Nicolas May and Lavjit Singh, had the privilege of presenting our expertise at the DSO Asset Management Forum held in Budapest on June 13th-14th. 🏙️📅 The presentation focused on a comprehensive approach to asset investment planning, emphasizing the integration of network planning to account for the penetration of distributed energy resources (such as electric vehicles 🚗🔋, heating systems 🌡️, and prosumers), as well as addressing asset replacement needs using best practices in asset management. 🛠️📈 Furthermore, the forum saw a consensus among system operators that effective business decision-making around asset investment and replacement relies heavily on the quality of available data and information. 📊📋 EGI also introduced an asset information strategy adopted and standards-based approach designed to organize data across various asset lifecycle stages better and from diverse sources and processes. 🗂️🔄 The approach could support utilities in reducing significant technology debt and costs while improving business coordination among various utility functions. 💡💰 #AssetManagementForum #SmartGridInnovation #EnergyFuture #SustainableUtilities
