Marine data are essential to acquire a better scientific understanding of the marine environment, for decision-making and economic growth, but access has traditionally been fragmented. This is where the European Marine Observation and Data Network EMODnet comes into play. Funded under #EU #EMFAF Programme, the Network streamlines data access, making marine data findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable. Working closely with Copernicus Marine Service, the other European Commission data service, EMODnet provides the data backbone for the EU Digital Twin of the Ocean, which is a highly accurate digital replica of the ocean. “I have seen EMODnet grow from a network of marine communities to a single point of access supporting sustainable marine policies. It is now an integral part of the Green Transition, establishing good practices by providing good data.” said Charlina Vitcheva, Director-General for the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. 🚨 New EMODnet Human Activities Data Sets Released! 🚨 In August 2024, two new EMODnet Human Activities data sets made their debut, offering vital insights for marine and environmental management: 1️⃣ Fish Quotas by Fishery Management Zone This dataset reports total allowable catches (TACs), as Initial Quantity and Adapted Quota, providing catch limits for fish species by Fishery Management Zone (FMZ). The data spans from 2012 to the present and will be updated annually. It is recommended to download the dataset to access the full range of attributes and information. A valuable resource developed by EMODnet Human Activities thematic, in cooperation with DG MARE, offering detailed insights into fishery quotas and management zones. 2️⃣ UNESCO World Heritage Coastal Sites This dataset includes the location and details of coastal UNESCO World Heritage sites. It provides key information on cultural and natural coastal sites, classified according to European Commission guidelines. It features site names, codes, proximity to coastlines, and site descriptions, offering a wealth of data for cultural heritage and environmental studies. 🔗 Explore both datasets here: Fish Quotas Dataset: https://lnkd.in/e63j8Q8N and UNESCO Coastal Sites Dataset: https://lnkd.in/exim22Rg #MarineData #FisheryManagement #UNESCO #CoastalConservation #Sustainability #EMODnet #DataScience

🌊 What an inspiring week at #ICESASC24! 🌊 The EMODnet Secretariat had an inspiring week connecting with the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) community at their Annual Science Conference 2024 in Newcastle, UK. EMODnet had an exhibition stand and spoke in sessions ranging from Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to marine data services, standards and best practices and dialogue with early career researchers on career pathways in marine data services. 🚀 EMODnet Technical Coordinator Conor Delaney co-chaired an exciting session on how #ArtificialIntelligence and #MachineLearning can be used in marine science, fisheries and wider societal applications, with many excellent presentations by the ICES community. Conor also updated the ICES community about the European Digital Twin Ocean developments and the joint effort by EMODnet and CMEMS, via the EDITO - European Digital Twin Ocean platform, which has created a cutting-edge data lake for #MarineData and #MachineLearning tools—a cloud-based community platform that is driving innovation and collaboration across the sector and delving into crucial topics like acoustic ecology, marine food webs, and fisheries management models, sparking valuable discussions and knowledge exchange. 👩🔬 Spotlight on Early Career Scientists: We were also thrilled to see early career scientists exploring the “seas of data” and gaining essential insights into best practices in marine data management. In a joint session co-organised by EMODnet and ICES, Kate Larkin (Head, EMODnet Secretariat) and Maria Makri (ICES Secretariat) shared their career paths to-date and presented on the EMODnet and ICES data services respectively, sharing their knowledge and experience to guide the next generation of marine scientists. 📊 A big thank you to everyone who joined us and engaged in our sessions at #ICESASC24 🌍 Stay tuned for more updates and opportunities to get involved with EMODnet! https://lnkd.in/gTFQ929G #MarineScience #OceanData #Sustainability #Innovation #DataScience #BlueEconomy #EarlyCareerResearchers #AIinScience
