🔍 Bottom-Up Meets Top-Down: Hungary’s Approach to Building Open Science Communities 📢 Hungary’s Governmental Agency for IT Development (KIFÜ), the nation’s largest provider of research and education infrastructure, and the NRDIO - National Research Development and Innovation Office (NKFIH) are hosting Hungary’s second national tripartite event today in Budapest, coinciding with the European Tripartite Event during Hungary’s EU Council presidency. In a recent interview, Ildikó Kádárné Kelemen and Janos Mohacsi from KIFÜ share insights into their role as Hungary’s Mandated Organisation for the EOSC Association. They discuss how KIFÜ is promoting Open Science through national surveys, competence centres, and tailored training programmes, with the aim of expanding EOSC membership in Hungary. Hybrid Collaboration Approach: Using lessons from NI4OS-Europe, KIFÜ combines top-down strategies with grassroots efforts to build a strong Open Science community in Hungary. Towards a Hungarian EOSC Node: Continuous dialogue with the NRDI Office has initiated plans for a Hungarian EOSC Node, supported by HUN-REN, Hungary’s national research network. Policy shifts, such as mandatory Research Data Management (RDM) plans, align Hungary with Horizon Europe standards, promoting Open Science. 🚧 Challenges Ahead: The primary challenge is reshaping researchers' attitudes towards data. EOSC EU Node officially launched at the EOSC Symposium 2024 On 22 October 2024, participants at the #EOSCsymposium in Berlin gathered in the plenary to celebrate a significant milestone, the official launch of the #EOSC EU Node. This moment marked the introduction of the Node’s service offerings, which became accessible to users that afternoon. By the conclusion of the Symposium on 23 October 2024, roughly 300 users had registered to explore the newly available services, demonstrating the immediate interest and demand for the Node. As the first building block in the #EOSCfederation, the EOSC EU Node aims to accelerate the adoption of Open Science principles across Europe. Read more: https://lnkd.in/dXPfbxHZ

All good things must come to an end, and today, we have officially closed the #EOSCsymposium2024. We were honoured to have Julia Lane from New York University as our keynote speaker, delivering powerful insights on how #FAIR principles are evolving in the context of #AI models and datasets. She highlighted the importance of democraticising #data and incentivising its curation, to build infrastructures that are safe, secure, and trustworthy. This year, the symposium was energised by a can-do spirit, with momentum building in every session. The enthusiasm and energy from this event make it clear that the community is ready for the next steps forward in building up the EOSC Federation and eager to explore the services offered by the newly-launched EOSC EU Node! We have wrapped on day 2 of the Symposium and there is much to celebrate! The mouth-watering juxtaposition of the Symposium’s first scientific keynote presentation with the European Commission’s public launch of the #EOSC EU Node — the first EOSC Node! — combined the long view for the potential #scientific and #societal impacts of EOSC with the sprouting of the first seed in the ground for the EOSC Federation. A theme that is developing across #European policy circles and within this Symposium is the idea that accessibility to #data is this century’s oil and gold. Next came the world’s first glimpse of an EOSC Node, the EOSC EU Node, rolled out by Commission representatives from DG CNECT and DG RTD. Acting director of DG CNECT, Gustav Kalbe, placed EOSC within the bigger picture of the global #digital infrastructure that will enable frontier #science, taking its place alongside the other outsize undertakings of High-Performance Computing and #AI. This framing set the context for the day’s remaining discussions, which centred on the developing process to enrol EOSC Nodes, the early chapters of the how-to oriented EOSC Federation Handbook, the roles of national EOSC Nodes in relation to those of thematic EOSC Nodes, and the work in progress to advance their interoperability. The official launch of the EOSC EU Node was a historic moment and a big success. As Kalbe said during his video message, a new era has begun. Day 1 recap of EOSC Symposium 2024: Key highlights and takeaways Today we welcomed around 460 participants in Berlin and another 900 online viewers, together representing 60 nations, including 25 countries outside of Europe. As it enters its operational phase, the message is clear: #EOSC is becoming an increasingly global endeavour central to European competitiveness. Opening the meeting via video address was the German Minister for Education and Research Bettina Stark-Watzinger, who, in recognising EOSC as an enabler for researchers, had a simple message: National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) goes EOSC, and it is time for all countries in Europe to go EOSC! Also via video address, European Commissioner Iliana Ivanova threw the full weight of the Commission behind EOSC, reaffirming its commitment in strong terms. In this she was echoed by Deputy DG for DG-RTD, Signe Ratso, who positioned EOSC as a central pillar in the European Research Area, and by former Italian prime minister Enrico Letta who declared EOSC to be of “the greatest importance” to the 5th freedom coined by his report on the future of the European single market: a European #knowledge commons dedicated to #research, #innovation, knowledge and education. The opening plenary was complemented by sessions on societal and economic impact, security of sensitive data, the new Opportunity Area Expert Groups, the EOSC collaboration with the European Health Data Space, and software development for EOSC, including presentations from several of the Horizon Europe INFRAEOSC projects across these sessions. #EOSCsymposium #EOSCsymposium2024 Photos by Andrew Grauman
