Today, the European Roundtable on Climate Change and Sustainable Transition (ERCST) hosted an event on implementation and transposition of hydrogen regulations in the #EU Member States. “#Hydrogen is not a means to an end, and not an end in itself. The regulatory framework including incentives, should be designed in the most technologically neutral way for #decarbonisation. Seems there are way different #approaches in Member States", Andrei Marcu, Executive Director, ERCST. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: ✅ A swift implementation of the EU framework is key to give the required regulatory visibility to the EU industry to make #investments. ✅ #Green hydrogen high prices still represent a significant obstacle to the uptake of the hydrogen market and the creation of a solid business model. Mechanisms at Member States level can play a crucial role in addressing the price gap. ✅ Countries have different approaches on how they provide incentives, as of they do valuable insights into the diverse ways EU Member States can implement and transpose the EU hydrogen #framework, adapting it to their local specificities. There was an exchange of views with national experts that discussed implementation methods, setting the scene for an in-depth discussion with the audience: 🟢Andrei Marcu, ERCST 🟢Olivier Imbault, ERCST 🟢Leon Dalheimer, Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Germany 🟢Julien Agier, Directorate General of Energy and Climate, France 🟢Dirk van Hoorn, Ministry of Economic Affairs, The Netherlands 🟢Jose Luis Cabo Sánchez, Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico, Spain 🟢Claes Vendel Nylander, Energimarknadsinspektionen, Sweden 🟢Chiara Cavallera, ERCST 📅 Stay informed about our upcoming events 👉🏼 t.ly/ya6OM

About us
The European Roundtable on Climate Change and Sustainable Transition (ERCST) was launched in September 2016 under the umbrella of the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) and is since November 2018 an independent non-profit association based in Brussels, Belgium. It aims to provide a neutral space where policy-makers and regulators can meet stakeholders to discuss climate change policy and how to manage the transition to a low GHG-economy in a sustainable way. While focused on European climate policy, ERCST fully recognises, and incorporates in its activities and thinking, the global dimension of climate change policy. Besides providing a place to meet, ERCST provides rigorous intellectual analysis in step with the EU and international political agenda, by using the experience and research input of its staff, and the input of the stakeholders who join its activities. ERCST aims to provide original ideas and research into European and international debates on climate change policy. ERCST represents its own views and strives to ensure in a very strict way its independence and integrity. ERCST focuses its work on a number of workstreams that operate with different formats such as Task Forces, moderated European Roundtables in Brussels and other capitals, briefings, and lunchtime meetings.

🚨 Two new ERCST publications are out 👇 🔹 "Including products further down the value chain in the EU CBAM" The report highlights that expanding the #CBAM to vulnerable downstream sectors, is crucial to prevent #carbon leakage, but this must be done with precision to avoid unnecessary administrative burdens. 📄Read it here 👉 t.ly/brSdZ 🔹 "Incentivising hydrogen demand: Critical challenges and opportunities for EU policy" This report aims to analyse the challenges in creating a strong #hydrogen market, highlighting tools and frameworks needed to support hydrogen demand, #green technologies and facilitate the #EU's low-carbon transition. 💬”Improvements need to be made immediately to the current version of the methodology proposed, including the possibility of assessing specific projects, signing PPAs as is the case for RFNBOs (particularly with nuclear sources), clarifying the calculation of the various elements of the formula and proposing certification standards. In the meantime, it is necessary to propose a clear and comprehensive solution for the transition period (grace period), notably by reviewing the default values and proposing a simplified method for calculating emissions”, said Andrei Marcu, Executive Director of ERCST on feedback on Methodology to determine #GHG emission savings of low-carbon fuels. 📌The European Roundtable on Climate Change and Sustainable Transition (ERCST) published a Feedback to the EU Commission Public consultation ‘Methodology to determine the #greenhouse gas (#GHG) emission savings of low-carbon fuels’. 📄Read the Feedback: t.ly/qiIxR #Sustainability #Hydrogen

Yesterday, the European Roundtable on Climate Change and Sustainable Transition (ERCST) presented his new report "Including products further down the value chain in the EU CBAM". “In a world in which asymmetries of climate actions directly or indirectly may result in carbon leakage, the #EU should therefore explore all possible options, including through changes in #CBAM as it currently stands. If this is found to be too complex or too expensive, the “do nothing” alternative is not an acceptable way forward and alternative solutions will not be explored and which may involve measures that may challenged current #WTO interpretations or even possibly the re-examination of current approaches to addressing climate change by the EU”, Andrei Marcu, Executive Director of ERCST. The report highlights that expanding the CBAM to vulnerable downstream sectors, is crucial to prevent carbon leakage, but this must be done with precision to avoid unnecessary administrative burdens. Thanks to the authors, Andrei Marcu, Aaron Cosbey, Michael Mehling and Sara Svensson for their contributions and insights. Special thanks to our panelists Vicente Hurtado Roa, Marc Poulain, Adrien Assous, Nick Bitsios, Laura Casuscelli, Arda Onkok, Ph.D., for their engaging and constructive discussions. And thank you to everyone who joined us both in person and online! 📄 Report: t.ly/brSdZ 📹 Recording: t.ly/nayZg

ERCST - European Roundtable on Climate Change and Sustainable Transition reposted this
Just before lunch on day three of Carbon Forward Expo London this Thursday - our voluntary carbon market day - we'll focus in on the Green Claims Directive. With legislated oversight on corporate claims in the pipeline, the voluntary carbon market is about to get a long-awaited set of rules that could mean standardisation, trading, finance, and scale. Moderator Bill Goldie, Environmental Markets Director at Redshaw Advisors Ltd will be asking panelists, what can we expect from the Green Claims Directive? Is it the new hope or a bureaucratic pitfall? With: • Aisha Rodriguez, Manager – Markets & Standards, VCMI • Ana Ruiz, Policy Analyst, ERCST - European Roundtable on Climate Change and Sustainable Transition • Tilmann Morata Liebert, Policy Officer, European Commission Register to join us for one, two, or three days here: https://lnkd.in/eSQMr8vJ #carbonforward #voluntarycarbonmarket #VCM #emissions #netzero Carbon Pulse

💡 The Future of Emission Trading System in the EU is out! Read it here 👉 https://t.ly/Y91X_ The report aims to examine the architecture, governance and role of emissions trading in meeting EU objectives in the European Climate Law during the second half of Phase IV (2025-2030) and beyond. This initiative is intended to produce seven reports, covering different aspects that will determine the future of the emission trading system in the EU. This first report will examine possible scope extensions of the emission trading coverage both sectorial as well as geographic. We sincerely thank the authors of the report — Andrei Marcu, Juan Fernando López Hernández, Alexandra Maratou, Pauline Nouallet, Marino Varricchio, Elena Bonfiglio and Nigel Caruana — for their dedication and insights.
