On October 25 2024, the steering committee of the Sustainable Forest Livelihoods for Communities in Guyana and Suriname programme, funded by the European Union in partnership with Agence française de développement dans les Caraïbes-Guyanes (AFD) and executed by WWF-Guianas and the Foundation for Forest Management and Production Control (SBB), convened for its second meeting in Suriname. Committee members received updates and had the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback. After opening remarks from the European Union Delegation and the AFD, WWF-Guianas presented the developed work plan 📈, which focuses on three value chains: agroforestry, timber, and nature-based tourism 🪵🍃🗺️. Under this program, proposals from the work areas of Para and Boven-Suriname will be eligible for funding and technical support. Next, SBB, the Foundation for Forest Management and Production Control, shared its results to date and outlined activities planned to strengthen forest governance. Initiatives to enhance capacity include training in the new Sustainable Forestry Information System Suriname (SFISS) 🛜, setting up field stations, acquiring vehicles, and partnering with the private sector in wood processing 🚪✅. WWF introduced the Sustainable Forest Livelihoods (SFL) branding to improve recognition and strengthen interconnectedness and collaboration within the programme 🤝🏽. All programme activities will now adopt this developed brand identity. AFD outlined synergies and collaboration opportunities with other ongoing programs and projects that have aligned goals. The meeting wrapped up with questions and comments from steering committee members 🤔❓, who acknowledged that while progress is promising, the next phase—particularly the call for proposals and the selection of project beneficiaries—will pose challenges that should not be underestimated and will require collective attention. The meeting ended with closing remarks from the European Union Delegation.  More info about the SFL programme? Check: https://lnkd.in/eRGArcZM European Union

🌍✨ Exciting news! Our esteemed partner PALLISCO-CIFM has featured us in their monthly publication, L'Echo des Forêts, which is dedicated to their team and local communities. This is a wonderful recognition from our long-standing partner! 😊 It’s hard to believe it’s been four years since we embarked on this journey together for responsible cacao! Thanks to the support of the AFD - Agence Française de Développement, we launched this remarkable initiative in 2020 alongside PCP-ACEFA. Today, we celebrate the independence of the Kongo cooperative, which now manages its workforce, invests in its production equipment, and provides valuable guidance to its members. Eticwood continues to offer technical support in agro practices, quality assurance for cacao, and guidance on exports—all while ensuring zero deforestation in alignment with the RDUE. Once the beans arrive in Belgium, they are transformed by the artisanal chocolatier ECOCOA into exceptional bean-to-bar chocolate that tells a beautiful story! The icing on the (chocolate)cake—and the most gratifying recognition of our efforts—is that new bean-to-bar chocolatiers are approaching us to learn how to source cacao from Kongo! We are thrilled to assist them, as increased sales of these beans translate to higher incomes for our partners! We are immensely proud to have demonstrated the viability and importance of collaboration among local communities, chocolatiers, and dedicated foresters in creating a new model for sustainable natural resource management that benefits everyone. Together, we’re making a difference! 🍫💚

ETICWOOD in Odzala-Kokoua! After an epic ride through the open Congolese ‘bush’ landscape in a sturdy Toyota landcruiser, the towering green wall, of virgin primary forest vegetation of the Odzala-Kokoua National Park came in sight. Evoking images of the forest elephants and gorillas lurking within. Team Eticwood joined forces with Nature+ asbl+ and African Parks Network, for an intense week of field visits and exploring market opportunities in the cocoa landscape on the fringes of the Odzala-Kokoua National Park. We met up with local chieftains, researchers and entrepreneurs to promote the vision and values of ETICWOOD, Nature+ asbl+ and African Parks Network to combine conservation, commerce and community development. Following last year’s successful production of the first Odzala-Kokoua, conservation friendly, dark chocolate. The scaling up of forest cocoa bean sourcing, is now up and running. Providing access to high end markets for local communities, bordering the national park. And creating opportunities and incentives for communities in the front line of nature conservation, to better preserve their natural ecosystems.  Further incentives for high quality fermentation and drying, is provided in the form of a premium, paid to the producers, after a thorough quality check. We can’t wait to start churning out this season’s first batches of Odzala-Kokoua dark chocolate at ECOCOA.

The Cameroonian cocoa harvest is in full swing! Team EticWood is excited to continue the collaboration with our local partners, Pallisco and GIC Placko. Our colleague Niels Vanhoudt travelled to the village of Kongo, where all the members of the cooperative were gathered for a mutual exchanging of ideas. These fruitful discussions resulted in the signing of a new supply contract, strengthening the long running collaboration. In the centre of excellence, the quality of the drying and fermentation process was streamlined. And finally, we dove into the equatorial forest to find the colourful pods ripening on the cocoa stems, in the shade of old forest growth. Here the pods are carefully separated from the tree trunks and only the best beans are selected for fermentation. And then transported to the fermentation facilities, hornbills flying overhead and clouds of large colourful butterflies nearby. Undaunted by torrential rains and tropical heat and following our GPS training session, the field agents will now continue to gather GPS coordinates of even the most remote cocoa plots. This will assure EUDR zero deforestation compliance and the long-term sustainability of the ECocoa forest-cacao supply chain. Looking forward to the final export of the beans and further processing in the chocolaterie!

#chocolat #environnement #qualité #éthique #equitable #francefrais #fournisseurs #gourmet #restauration #commerciale #restaurateur #food #nourriture #chef #alimentaire #restaurationcommerciale #produitsdenosregions #resto #client #gastronomie #hautsdefrance #lille
