📣 Secretary General Peter Vermaat joined the panel discussion on the challenges of the future of the energy system during yesterday's Council of European Energy Regulators (CEER) Annual conference. ⚠ Considering the newly adopted EU energy market design rules, Europe will face critical challenges in electricity and infrastructure, especially in the upcoming legislative changes. Peter shared insights on the emerging challenges and opportunities of the Future energy system. ➡ Key takeaways from the discussion: 📌From DSOs point of view, #demandresponse and #energystorage are vital flexibility solutions, closely linked to the decentralised grid. The key challenge is tackling congestion while enhancing local flexibility. 📌Security of supply and #flexibility go hand in hand. A well-designed regulatory framework, like EU Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER)’s ongoing NC Demand Response consultation, is essential to removing barriers for a future-proof energy market. 📌Local flexibility innovations in industrial zones, where energy is shared based on city needs, supported by flexible capacity contracts will pave the way for more responsive grids. 📌Capacity is the new scarcity—pricing needs to shift away from volume, and move towards adequately valuing capacity. 📌#Consumers will increasingly be at the heart of the #energytransition, with more opportunities to engage in flexibility solutions. 📌 Reinforcing #grids and optimising both existing and new capacity is crucial for achieving carbon reduction targets. 📌#Anticipatoryinvestments will allow DSOs to connect more resources and stay efficient. 📌Interaction between #DSOs and #TSOs should be redefined: congestion happens mostly at low/medium level so DSO grid will become more important in preventing them, unlocking flexibility and keeping the system stable. 📌Small DSOs are pioneering #flexibilitysolutions at the local level, as they are implementing pragmatic approaches within their communities. 🤝 The event was a great opportunity to engage with experts and peers in the energy sector and discuss topics of common interest. Thank you, Mara Berzina, for having us! Leonardo Meeus | Kristian Ruby | Walburga Hemetsberger | Michael Villa #CAC2024 #CEERAnnualConference2024 #energymarket #Energyregulation #Energysector

🚩 Today, we’re wrapping up our #ExploreEUGrid campaign by providing insights on the last key element of the EU DSO Map: the rollout of smart meters across Europe. #Smartmetering was introduced in 2009 as part of the EU’s Third Energy Package, which required Member States to achieve an 80% deployment rate by the end of 2020, when supported by a cost-benefit analysis with a positive outcome. 📊 As you can see from the bar infographic, the deployment rates vary significantly between Member States, reflecting the differences in criterion, cost-benefit analysis outcomes, and complexities of validation by national lawmakers. 🔐 💻 However, while all EU countries work towards further smartening the grid, through #SmartMeters or other, new EU-level requirements around #dataprivacy and #cybersecurity are being developed. This collaborative effort between the EU, national authorities, and local #DSOs will lead to a smarter grid, now a prerequisite to a full energy transition. The more you know🧠: Smart meters are digital devices that measure in real time the electricity consumption (and production) of households. Their widespread deployment across the EU is a game changer in the #EnergyTransition, enabling: 📈 Easier monitoring and managing of the distribution network. 🍃 Smoother integration of #renewables into the grid. 🤝 Demand-side response, connecting customers to the distribution grid and ultimately empowering them. 👉 Discover the EU DSO Map ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dHWHjgRX 📰Read the Euractiv article in case you’ve missed it: https://lnkd.in/dsVYZizj #DSOMap #EnergyFacts #DSOGridInsights #ElectricityGrids #KnowledgeSharingforGrids #KnowledgeSharing #DSOinfrastructure #DemandResponse #DistributionGrids

👏 A big thank you to EASE - The European Association for Storage of Energy, for hosting Stephan Gross! 🔋 It was a pleasure to participate in the panel discussion on 'Local Markets and Congestion Management: Policy Barriers and the Curtailment Challenge'. We had an insightful exchange on the critical role of DSOs in addressing this complex issue. #EnergyStorage #DSOs
🌍 #ESGC2024 Just wrapped up session 1.5: "Curtailing Renewables – Congestion, Local Markets, and the Way Forward". An insightful session moderated by Patrick Clerens, Secretary General of EASE, explored the challenges of managing local markets and congestion, as well as the policy barriers that lead to renewable energy curtailment. 🎙️Key insights from Thomas Kawam from the European Commission: "We urgently need locational signals in the electricity sector to accelerate the penetration of renewables. This can have a positive effect on all components of the consumers' electricity bill: commodity prices, tariffs and taxes/levies." 🎙️Georg Thomaßen from the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) shared that in 2040 between 100-130 TWh of renewable generation are at risk of being curtailed. Investment incentives should be improved by adding a locational component to existing and planned electricity infrastructures. 🎙️Stephan Gross from EU DSO Entity stated: "There's a massive amount of new connection requests in the distribution grid. Developing the distribution grid is essential to achieving key EU policy targets, reducing electricity costs and building a decarbonised energy system." 🎙️Pietro Grigorio Rabassi from Nord Pool highlighted that the lack of a clear legal framework is the most important obstacle to the development of a flexibility market. Clean power in Europe is making inroads, but we need to rapidly evolve the energy system to be able to handle it. ️ 👁 While taking a closer look at the #DSOmap, you can discover two sets of information about European DSOs: 📌 The length of the distribution grid 📌 The concentration of #DSOs overseeing the national distribution network This map helps us to further #ExploreEUGrid, as it shows the face of the distribution grid per country and reflects on the size of the main DSOs in charge of it. 🌐 The data presented on the central map should be viewed in relation to the number of DSOs and connected customers, providing a clearer picture of the national landscape and comparison between countries. The more you know🧠: Member States face different challenges when managing their grids, depending on the local climate and terrain. ☀ For instance, the one Greek DSO manages a national grid that includes non-interconnected islands, all of which must be resilient to the intense heat of the European south. ❄️In contrast, Finland’s grid spans 421.350 kilometers, enduring extreme cold to deliver electricity even beyond the Arctic Circle. 🇭🇺🇪🇺 Our Board Members Remy Garaude Verdier (Enedis) and Luis Vale Cunha (E-REDES) joined the discussion on the technical challenges during the Electricity Grid Development Conference organised in #Budapest by the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. 🌐During the panel discussion: 👉 Mr Luis Vale Cunha emphasised the importance of both investing in the grid and increased utilisation of the grid by an optimised mix of expansion, #flexibility and #digitalisation. 👉 Mr Remy Garaude Verdier pointed at the challenges in #France for connecting 5GW of distributed RES to the DSO grid this year. One way to accommodate this, from the paradigm to keep local generation and consumption closely together as much as possible, is through ‘collective self-consumption’ which Enedis is actively facilitating. 🇪🇺🇭🇺 Today, our President Vincenzo Ranieri, represented EU DSO Entity during the Electricity Grid Development Conference organised in Budapest by the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, presenting the short and long-term challenges for DSO’s to implement the #Fitfor55 objectives in an historical moment that sees the "grid momentum" paving its way in the European political agenda. 🌐During the panel discussion on the electricity network challenges, Vincenzo Ranieri raised the audience's attention on the fact that all challenges are interconnected, and the scale of the challenge is unprecedented. In particular, he addressed some key challenges included in the European Commission’s #GridActionPlan in which DSO Entity is proactively cooperating on with all the relevant stakeholders, such as: 📈#Investments & #Financing: where a digital, resilient and open grid is a precondition to keep up with the immense growth of RES and electrification as well as with the increasing extreme weather events. 📐 Regulatory Framework: that allows for anticipatory investments and enables grids, to keep up with the immense growth of RES and electrification. The regulatory framework shall, in fact, support the #TSOs and #DSOs to be prepared, to increase the hosting capacity of the infrastructure in a timely manner through anticipatory investment. 🤝 Infrastructure #permitting and public engagement: with the need of a streamlined approach to reduce complexity, one-stop shops, and faster procedures with fewer delays, together with cooperative planning processes and the early involvement of DSOs. Lastly, #skills and #supplychains: 👷♀️ Skills: where a recently disseminated DSO Entity survey showed that 60% of the respondents had troubles with equipment deliveries and 70% with finding qualified staff. Therefore, the skill topic is huge and has been recently addressed in a Joint Statement with other 15 EU-associations, asking for a European Grid Academy within the framework of the EU’s Net-Zero Academies to build and develop the right skills in the direct and indirect grid value chain. Read the statement here➡️https://bit.ly/CoaGrids 🔗 European Supply Chains: A pressing topic are the long lead times for purchasing key-components such as transformers, cables, and switchgear, as shown by our survey, a constraint that seems to be rooted in the scarcity of certain individual components (such as chips) or (affordable) raw materials to produce them (such as copper, steel, or aluminium). As par the DSO Entity's motto, overcoming those challenges are a joint effort and only with a strong and timely cooperation we will make it work, working toward a just and fair #energytransition!
