The European Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) - the world's first comprehensive regulation on artificial intelligence - entered into force this month. The AI Act is designed to ensure that AI developed and used in the EU is trustworthy, with safeguards to protect people's fundamental rights. The regulation aims to establish a harmonised internal market for AI in the EU, encouraging the uptake of this technology and creating a supportive environment for innovation and investment. The AI Act introduces a forward-looking definition of AI, based on a product safety and risk-based approach in the EU. https://lnkd.in/egkvkTHP

The European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIHs) have launched a #digital maturity assessment tool that will help #SMEs identify their strengths and weaknesses in their company's digital transformation. Companies can use the tool to assess their maturity through six key criteria: digital business strategy, digital readiness, digital skills improvement, data management, automation and intelligence, and green digitisation. With this information, SMEs can plan their digital growth more effectively and receive tailored advice from their local EDIH. The European Commission recently published a document entitled 'SME participation in Horizon Europe', a report providing a detailed overview of the participation of #SMEs in the Horizon Europe programme. The study examines the distribution and #funding of SMEs in the various work programmes, verifying whether the programme complies with legal targets and expectations. It also analyses the geographical distribution of participating SMEs, their structural characteristics and their role in collaborative research and innovation projects. The uptake of innovative solutions by all industrial actors is crucial for research and innovation policies aiming at transformative impact and, in particular, the participation of SMEs in Horizon Europe is one of the specific objectives of the programme. Approximately 23.1% of EU SMEs with at least 10 employees carry out research and development, and it is estimated that at least 240,000 European SMEs have developed product or process innovations. https://lnkd.in/dW_S99fa
