Discussing #aviation ✈️ #sustainability 🌱 & urban air mobility (#UAM) at the #ICAS2024 Congress in Florence 🇮🇹. 👉 The 34th Congress of the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences (#ICAS) saw EUROCONTROL acting Director European Green Sky Marylin Bastin chair a series of sustainability-related discussions involving Andreas Boschen, executive director of the SESAR Joint Undertaking, as well as representatives from NASA, DLR & Lufthansa, touching on: 🍃 sustainability-linked research and innovation 🍃 sustainable aviation fuels 🍃 advanced engine technologies 🍃 AI-driven decision support in ops. Also featured: a research paper 📄 presented by #EIH EUROCONTROL Innovation Hub #drone expert Giancarlo Ferrara on the recently completed CORUS-XUAM project which addressed UAM airspace integration challenges, and a 📄 paper co-authored by EIH colleague Philippe BOUCHAUDON on validating flow-based arrival management for en-route airspace with our ESCAPE Light simulator, which was presented by his peers from Japan.

AMHS is a standard for aeronautical ground-ground communications – allowing the exchange of planning, coordination & alerting information between aviation stakeholders – including the transmission of #NOTAMs, flight plans and meteorological data. Looking forward to the 1️⃣st #ECHO2 dissemination workshop - taking #HAO higher airspace ops one step further in Capua 🇮🇹. 👉 The ECHO 2 (European Concept of Higher Airspace Operations) project workshop will take place 7-8 November 2024 hosted by CIRA - Italian Aerospace Research Centre at their Capua HQ. ECHO 2 is a 3-year SESAR Joint Undertaking #SESAR3JU project coordinated by EUROCONTROL which builds on research undertaken by its forerunner ECHO, a project that developed a #ConOps for higher airspace. Specifically, the project will focus on introducing a module on space launch 🚀real-time monitoring, and packages covering ground & air-ground operational integration procedures. The project is at the forefront of aviation innovation, focusing on the end-to-end integration of new entrants, such as space vehicles, #HAPS and supersonic & hypersonic aircraft into the EUROCONTROL #NM Network Manager area ✈️. #Uspace time: Getting ready for the new CORUS five project with project partners at #EIH the EUROCONTROL Innovation Hub. 👉 Building on solid work done by the CORUS and CORUS-XUAM projects, EIH is now leading a consortium of 13 partners to further develop a U-space ConOps as part of CORUS five, a SESAR Joint Undertaking exploratory research project. The project - which just had its technical kickoff ⚽️ at #EIH - will tackle the challenges of safely integrating #UAS into the same airspace as traditional aviation, including airspace that is not presently covered, such as areas above very low level, and in the vicinity of controlled #airports ✈️. The previous version of the ConOps published by CORUS-XUAM will evolve to integrate new regulatory requirements, with a focus on safety assessment, especially under non-nominal conditions. This new iteration will be instrumental in shaping the future of aviation, particularly in integrating uncrewed vehicles into regular airspace operations. The latest #EuropeanAviationOverview shows that week 35 (26.08-01.09) tracked the typical seasonal pattern, with a small traffic increase ahead of the expected decline by the end of September. ✈ Key facts include: 📌 34,388 average daily flights (⬆️4.8% vs 2023) across the network 📌 Comparable en-route #ATFM delays to the previous week, despite convective weather disrupting operations, particularly on Friday 📌 Low-cost airlines continue to outperform mainline ones, with both Ryanair and Wizz Air operating over a third more flights than pre-pandemic 📌 Arrival punctuality recovered slightly to 68.4%, better than in 2023, but still well below 2019.
