#Cool moves for #sustainability in #Spain! 😎 In #Barcelona, a first-of-its-kind #districtcooling project is being deployed. This solution will recover residual cold from the Barcelona port, generating 131 GWh of #local, #affordable, & #sustainable cooling annually by 2024. ♻ The project is expected to avoid over 42,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, harnessing #energy that would be wasted otherwise. This has significant replication potential and demonstrates district cooling’s versatility to accommodate local needs! 🙌 🔎For more content like this, and to stay up-to-date on the latest #districtheating & #cooling trends, check out our #DHCMarketOutlook 2024! From old coal to clean #DHC! 🙌 Last week we got to visit the Thermal Power Plant Šoštanj (TEŠ) in Velenje, #Slovenia, and we got to discover the impressive initiatives of this European Green Ambassador for 2024. 🍀 The #local #districtheating network, supplying #heat to 40 000 citizens, is currently mostly reliant on a combined heat and power plant fueled by coal, while also providing electricity to 1/3 of the country. However, the city has hefty plans for the oldest district heating network in Slovenia. Taking part in the EU's 100 #carbonneutral cities by 2030, this exemplary city has developed an ambitious #decarbonisation plan to ensure their district heating and #cooling network is 100% powered by #sustainable energy by 2030, by mapping the potential for #solar thermal and #geothermal solutions in combination with mining facilities. 👐 It is exciting to see Velenje's efforts to #transition to a more sustainable #energy system, all while maintaining a strong & local economy! From 100% coal to 100% cool, green looks great on you!😉 European Commission | Mestna občina Velenje / Municipality of Velenje | Ecorys | András Takács

From Nairobi to Brussels, a new momentum for #districtenergy and energy efficiency is taking shape! 🌎 At the International Energy Agency (IEA) 9th Annual Global Conference on Energy Efficiency in Nairobi, Kenya, we joined worldwide business leaders in a roundtable discussion hosted by the Energy Efficiency Movement, Kenya Association of Manufacturers, and the International Business Council (IBC) from the World Economic Forum. This led to the development of the 𝗡𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗶 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻, a 5-point recommendation for Public-Private Collaboration to Double Energy Efficiency by 2030, which was officially presented to the IEA at the conference’s closing. 👏 We are thrilled the document acknowledges the pivotal role of #districtheating and #cooling to deliver more efficient #energy systems and economies. It calls on « governments and private sector to support clustering of opportunities across industries and the built environment to improve energy intensity through sharing of infrastructure, district energy approaches as well as within industrial clusters. » Say hello to #EnergyEfficiency 2.0, one that doesn’t only focus on the energy we don’t consume, but also on the energy we share and re-use, for the benefit of all! 🙌🍀 Discover more ➡ https://bit.ly/460ixDa Aurélie Beauvais | Mike Umiker | Anna Hall | Jack Miller

We were honoured to be a part of the 3rd Asia Pacific Urban Energy Assembly in Bangkok last week! 😎 Eloi Piel, our Market Intelligence Director, moderated pivotal discussions on enablers to accelerate the uptake of #sustainable #districtcooling, based on #EU #success stories. 🌡The hike of global temperatures & increasingly hot summers highlights the importance of #policymakers & #businesses taking up the #cooling challenge worldwide! District cooling is a proven solution enabling efficient and safe supply issued from #renewables and #wasteheat (& cold!) sources. In Europe, district cooling sales topped over 3 TWh in 2022, up by nearly 10% compared to the previous year! 📈 Countries such as #Denmark, #France, #Spain and #Austria plan to prioritise sustainable district cooling to face the hotter European summers. 🌅 Asia Pacific Urban Energy Association (APUEA) | Devcco | MAN Energy Solutions | Alfa Laval | ENGIE | Hydraulic Analysis Group Limited | Eric Lindström | Markus Hons | Neil Parry | Glyn Addicott | Sebastien Walker | Mikael Jakobsson | Peter Lundberg

🏙 #DYK that cities consume 2/3 of global energy and emit over 70% of CO2? To meet our energy and climate goals, we need to double our #energyefficiency efforts by 2030. This means smarter #heating and #cooling, #sectorcoupling, and #strongpartnerships. But how do we scale up the process? 🤔 Alfa Laval has teamed up with experts in the field- including Euroheat & Power - to identify 10 key recommendations for cities, industry peers, and policymakers regarding how to accelerate the energy transition with cities as change arenas for a more sustainable future! 💪 To do so, we need to: 🤝 Consider both #electricity AND heat to reach #netzero ❄ Think about district cooling as a way to reduce electricity demand 🗺 Focus on geographical, area-based programs to improve energy efficiency ♻ Promote and enable waste heat recovery and sector coupling Facilitating waste heat recovery and 🔓 De-risk and manage upfront capital costs for clean heat projects 📏 Implement standardisation to accelerate the energy transition 🖥 Increase efficiency in the district energy sector through digitalization 📈 Highlight district energy as an accelerator for economic growth 📚 Provide future skills and explore the future through #academia 🏙 Recognise #districtheating & #cooling as a sector to promote awareness and address the blind spots in policy making, and city planning. Join us in transforming awareness into action. Let’s build sustainable cities together! 🍀 Read the recommendation paper now ➡ https://bit.ly/3zjIalU ENGIE| E.ON| Kraftringen| Ramboll| Aurubis

We were honoured to be invited to share the views of the #districtheating and #cooling industry at the 10th Energy Infrastructure Forum in #Copenhagen! 🙌 Our vice-president Frans de Heij emphasised the essential contribution of DHC infrastructures to reducing system costs, increasing #flexibility and enhancing the security of #energysupply. A recent study in the Netherlands showed that the deployment of DHC can reduce energy system costs by 40%, avoiding electricity network congestion and limiting the need for new investment in electricity networks. 🌐 Developing more DHC networks in #Europe is not only a practical solution for facilitating the integration of clean and renewable energies, both electric and non-electric, but it also reduces the costs of the #energytransition for society as a whole! This is no mean feat when you consider that rising energy prices have become a real issue for our fellow #citizens and our #industries. We are therefore delighted that the Forum has highlighted the importance of integrated and optimised network #planning, which takes into account the interdependencies and synergies not only between electrons and molecules, but also between #heat energy sources and #infrastructures! 🔥🏢
