  • The #EBAConference wrapped up with an insightful session on biomethane’s role in transport decarbonisation.   🚢 Biomethane offers a green solution for the shipping industry. Bio-LNG can be directly integrated into existing LNG vessels, making bio-LNG an immediate solution for reducing GHG emissions. It can also be stored, transported, and refuelled using the existing LNG infrastructure in ports. Biomethane is projected to make up 8% of transport fuels by 2040 and 16% by 2050, with the European Commission estimating 19 TWh of biomethane for maritime use by 2030. The LNG fleet is on the rise with 469 operational and 537 booked vessels.   ✈️ In aviation, where emissions are notoriously challenging to address, biomethane holds significant promise. Sustainable aviation fuel derived from biomethane is being recognised as a viable option both at the industry and government levels. This could be a game-changer in paving the way for a more sustainable future in the aviation sector.   #EUBW2024 #biomethane #transport #decarbonisation #maritime #aviation

Spotlight on two engaging breakout sessions on trading and tech development at the #EBAConference! 🚀 🔹 Biomethane across borders: trading and procurement explained. In collaboration with ERGaR European Renewable Gas Registry aisbl, this session tackled critical issues surrounding cross-border biomethane trade. With biomethane becoming a cornerstone of corporate decarbonisation strategies, energy suppliers, traders, brokers, and corporate users are working hard to ensure its seamless movement across EU countries. Although regulatory and technical barriers exist, there is great potential for a Single EU Market for biomethane. Cross-border trade is key for ensuring wide access and achieving Europe’s decarbonisation goals.   🔹 Beyond AD: the future is now. This session explored the potential of methanation and gasification technologies, which are vital for scaling up biomethane production. Did you know there are already 35 operational e-methane plants and 138 gasification plants across Europe? These technologies will have a significant impact on the future of renewable gas production.   #EUBW2024 #biogas #biomethane #gasification #innovation #technology #GasPackage #trading

This morning at the #EBAConference, we heard from high-level speakers on the crucial steps being taken to advance biogases deployment in Poland, Italy, and France.   Momentum is increasing among EU Member States to reach the REPowerEU target of 35 bcm of biomethane, with a total of 14.16 bcm already committed for 2030. Currently, 11 countries have set specific targets for biomethane, while 17 countries have established targets for biomethane and/or biogas.   🔸Michał Łęski, PhD from Ministerstwo Klimatu i Środowiska highlighted Poland's vast potential in biogas and biomethane development. According to the National Energy and Climate Plan, Poland aims to achieve 32.6% of renewable energy sources in gross final energy consumption by 2030. Currently, the country has approximately 305 MW of installed capacity across more than 400 biogas plants. Poland's technical potential for biogas production stands at around 13-15 bcm, which equates to about 8 bcm of biomethane.   🔸 Giovanni Perrella, from The Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, shared updates on Italy's growing biomethane sector. Italy is aiming to replace 10% of natural gas consumption with biomethane by 2030. To fully realise the impact of biomethane production on the green transition, support for biomethane production should be integrated with the agri-food industry along the value chain. This will help minimise transportation costs and feedstock loss, while promoting the local application of digestate, as well as the use of renewable CO2 and biomethane in industry, explained Giovanni Perrella.   🔸 Aymeric de Loubens from Ministères Territoires Écologie Logement shared insights on the recent Biogas Production Certificates Decree, set to launch in 2026. This market mechanism aims to create favourable conditions for accelerating the biomethane sector and is designed to support the injection of more than 10 TWh of biomethane into natural gas networks during 2026-2028 period.   #EUBW2024 #biogas #biomethane #NECPS #energytransition #REPowerEU
