Last Saturday, we were invited to the XIth International Nutrition and Dietetics Congress in Ankara, Turkey, to present our food and health literacy findings across Europe! 📊✨ Presented by Dr Katerina Palascha, part of our dedicated EUFIC research team, we uncovered significant knowledge gaps among certain groups, particularly men, younger adults and individuals with lower education levels. 🤔 So, how can we bridge these gaps? To start, it’s clear that we need to enhance the effectiveness of national dietary guidelines, ensuring that vital information on food literacy is accessible to all. 🌐🥗 A heartfelt thank you to Sabri Ulker Food Research Foundation for inviting us to share our insights. It was a privilege to engage in such an important discussion! 💡 Hacettepe Üniversitesi

The discussion continues on the consumer’s side with the panel: ‘Reducing consumer food waste, challenges and opportunities’ 🤔 Betty Chang our Research Area Lead has brought EUFIC’s insights on the narratives that influence consumers’ behaviours, like social norms and cultural values. However, companies, HoReCa and governments are equally responsible for how messages are crafted and shared ❗ To explore new ‘entry points’ for change that haven't yet been considered we also listen to Anja Katalin De Cunto from C40 Cities, Dr Richard Swannell FRSA, Director of WRAP, Sanne Stroosnijder on behalf of Wageningen University & Research, Sophie Attwood, Founder & Director of Behaviour Global and Stephane Leroux, Executive Director of International Food Waste Coalition (IFWC). The moderator of this panel was Gyula Kasza, founder of the Wasteless Foundation, who established the Hungarian National Food Waste Prevention Programme. ❇It was great to learn how food waste solutions can be a win-win for other #FoodSystems related problems. Many thanks to FAO for this opportunity! #HU24EU

Today we are in Budapest for the FAO regional conference on the prevention of #FoodWaste. He underlined the key role of #digital system in supporting food donation systems. 📚 The General Director of the General Directorate of Regulatory and Compliance in Agriculture, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Albania, Mr Bledi Mile, has instead brought examples of the country's #educational programmes. 🔎 Mr Cyrille Schweizer, Agricultural Advisor- Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Embassy of France in Romania, has reported on the progress of food waste #law from mandatory provision of doggy bags in restaurants to preventive measures in supermarkets. 👩 Mr Robert van Otterdijk, Leader of FAO FLW programme in Europe and Central Asia & Agrifood officer, emphasized the need for more #ConsumerBehaviour insights. #HU24EU

🌾 The health benefits of whole grains are undeniable, from reducing the risk of heart disease to improving digestion or supporting overall well-being. Yet, many of us aren't including enough of these nutrient-rich foods in our diets. 𝐖𝐡𝐲? Often, it's due to a lack of knowledge on how to cook these foods or identify them in the supermarket, misconceptions, or simply not knowing where to start. That's why we at #EUFIC have launched the #SwitchToWholeGrains Challenge —an engaging initiative that will kick off in November and is designed to help you make healthier choices one step at a time. Through weekly challenges, delicious whole grain recipes created by chefs from the LIFE Climate Smart Chefs project, and practical tips, we're here to guide and inspire you to incorporate more whole grains into your meals. Whether you're looking to improve your diet, try new recipes, or learn more about whole grains, this challenge has something for everyone. Plus, there's a chance to win a 100 € voucher of your choice! Sign up and get ready to start your journey towards better food choices this November! 💪🍽
