As part of my PhD research, The Global Disability Innovation Hub is supporting the creation of a global map and directory of Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) through the AT2030 program.
Important notes:
- *In places such as the UK and parts of the US, there is a strong preference for identity-first language, meaning "DPO" is more commonly used than "OPD." Given the funding source for this project and the global majority use of OPD, this project primarily uses OPD but encompasses both DPO and OPD-identifying organizations.*
- By definition, OPDs are part of civil society/the third sector. To qualify as an OPD, organizations must be non-business and non-governmental entities.
Why create a Global OPD map? 💭
OPDs play a critical role in disability movements worldwide, but often face barriers to networking and being able to showcase their work. Our aim for the Global OPD Map is to make it easier for OPDs to find one another and be found by potential partners, members, and funders. We know that many OPDs are too busy advocating and providing services to maintain an updated website or prioritise showcasing their activities externally. The need for such a resource has emerged from research with OPDs themselves.
In the future, we hope to expand the scope of the project to include capacity-building, networking, and other opportunities for OPDs.
What will happen to the information you provide? 🔏
We will use the information gathered in the survey to add your OPD to the online map, which will be free and publicly available. We are not asking for information about individuals – only organizations who wish to be visible on the map. We are looking to understand the focus of each OPD’s work and some key details about your organisation.
What else should you know about this project? 🤟
This is a large undertaking several years in the making, with over 3,000 OPDs on the map so far. We expect to have the website up and running the coming year. Until then, those with any questions about this project can reach out to us at opd.map@ucl.ac.uk.
We look forward to seeing your OPD on the map!
