About us
The European Partnership for Democracy is an independent European non-profit organisation supporting democratic transformations outside the European Union. As a network of European civil and political society organisations working on democracy assistance, EPD advocates for a stronger presence of democracy support on the European Union's agenda and facilitates the exchange of knowledge and good practices in democratic transformations around the world. We do this through innovative methodologies based on the development of effective partnerships with organisations in third countries, and the facilitation of political and social dialogue. The EPD network is conceived as a community of practice, i.e. a group of organisations that work together because, by doing so, they can substantially improve the way they operate in the realm of democracy support and provide a comprehensive response to the needs of populations. This notion does not only apply to the EPD as a network and its institutional development, but also to all the actions and partnerships constructed under the EPD banner.

💡 The latest Euronews' "Brussels, My Love?" edition raised the following debate: is democracy becoming a phase-out model? 🎙️ EPD's Executive Director Ken Godfrey joined the show to discuss democracy’s future in Europe and beyond with Shada Islam and Jerome Bellion-Jourdan. 🗣️ From protests in Turkey to crackdowns on fundamental freedoms in Hungary, the panel explored how democratic values are being challenged and how to respond. 🖋️ Ken Godfrey underscored the diversion tactics of authoritarian forces: "The right to protest and freedom of assembly are fundamental. Over the past year, Nets4Dem has been working with local governments, researchers, and civil society leaders to strengthen democratic resilience and embed participation into policymaking. Our key initiatives and impact are now summarised in the first ever Nets4Dem Annual Report - explore the full content here: https://bit.ly/3PWpUnG Here’s what we learned along the way: 🤝🏽 Local governments are leading the charge; many of the most impactful innovations are happening at the city level, where decision-making is closer to citizens. 🗂️ Barriers to participation still persist - low engagement, digital divides, and institutional resistance can prevent meaningful change. 🔝 We need to move beyond pilots - participatory processes must be designed to scale and integrate into governance structures for long-term impact. 🖇️ Collaboration is the key - by bringing together policymakers, researchers, and advocates, we are helping create a stronger foundation. 📢 How did Big Tech platforms perform in their first Risk Assessment Reports under the EU’s Digital Services Act, and how can they improve going forward? Today, the DSA Civil Society Coordination Group releases its brief: an Initial Analysis on the First Round of Risk Assessment Reports under the EU Digital Services Act (#DSA). The purpose of this feedback is to identify key trends, useful practices and gaps in this first iteration, so that future risk assessments and mitigation measures required under Article 34 and 35 of the DSA are more tangible and do more to advance user safety. This brief focuses on four key aspects: 🔹 Identifying useful practices – what to keep for next time; 🔹 Why it is crucial to focus on platform design when assessing risk; 🔹 Trust with users and regulators can only be fostered by providing data; 🔹 Meaningful stakeholder consultation is the key to a safer online environment. The DSA CSO Coordination Group, convened and coordinated by CDT Europe, is an informal coalition of civil society organisations, academics and public interest technologists that advocates for the protection of human rights, in the implementation and enforcement of the EU Digital Services Act.
