🌱 Plant breeding has undergone a significant transformation, playing a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency and resilience of supply chains. Scientific symposium entitled “Plant Breeding for Supply Chains" this week at the University of Hohenheim was a success story.   Main aims of this event were to address these challenges by exploring innovative technologies and resources that can support breeders in adapting to and improving current agricultural systems. Behind this was a lot of great work in preparation for this event. On behalf of the KWS Group participants, I would like to thank the entire organizing team and especially Dr. Patrick Thorwarth and Prof. Dr. Friedrich Longin (both LSA/UHOH) for this excellent event! A report recently released by Plants for the Future analyses trends in R&I funding for plant breeding from FP7 through Horizon 2020 and the first half of Horizon Europe. From rising funding to innovative methods like #NGTs and #GM, plant breeding has seen highs and lows in the EU’s research landscape. This work focuses on selecting genotypes for grain yield and resilience across northern, central, and southern Europe 🌍. Spotlight on the work of the AgroBioInstitute (ABI) in Bulgaria 🚜At a field site in Pavlikeny village, North Central Bulgaria, 60 foreign soybean genotypes have been meticulously evaluated for the environmental performance and capacity for adaption. Professor Otang Ntui discussed real-world applications of CRISPR, including genome editing strategies for bananas 🍌, a staple food in East Africa. While North African countries like Morocco have yet to adopt guidelines for the technology, early-phase research is underway 🥼. For instance, Otang Ntui and his students are developing virus-resistant tomatoes 🍅 using CRISPR.
