Rebuilding European liberalism as a dynamic force of inspiration and creativity has never been more urgent. Last weekend, the ALDE Party gathered in Estoril, Portugal, for its annual Congress, a remarkable event that brought together liberal minds and advocates from across the continent. It was an inspiring opportunity for diverse European FNF offices to unite at a shared stand, fostering collaboration and exchanging ideas that push the boundaries of progress. Our engagement went beyond the stand, as we contributed to insightful side sessions on pressing issues, including the transition between the Hungarian and Polish EU presidencies, the geopolitical challenges in the South Caucasus region, as well as the importance of European military cooperation, the future of the Western Balkans, and standing in solidarity with democratic forces in Venezuela. Each session reflected our commitment to addressing complex global challenges through a liberal lens. We extend our sincere gratitude to our colleagues from Central Europe, Friedrich Naumann Foundation Madrid, South Caucasus, Romania and Belgrade for their invaluable contributions. A special thank you to the ALDE Party for their exceptional organization and unwavering support, which made this weekend both inspiring and impactful.

Join us at this conference which will focus on two topics: In a first panel, we will discuss the road ahead for Ukraine as it seeks to join the EU and NATO. What are particular critical challenges? What potential benefits will a Ukrainian membership have for both EU and NATO? And what kind of security actor will in a time after the war? In a second panel, we will discuss the effects of more than two and a half years of war on the remarkable Ukrainian societal resilience. What are the current resources for this, and are they at risk of eroding over time? How is societal resilience impacted by the reality of kinetic war and hybrid threats? How can wartime resilience be bolstered? And what lessons can we learn from Ukraine`s experiences? On Monday, FNF Europe hosted an event on Franco-German Impusles for the EU’s Strategic Agenda 2024-2029 with MEP Jan-Christoph Oetjen and Alfredo Capusso Policy Advisor to MEP Sandro Gozi. The discussion was moderated by Jeanette Süß. The speakers reflected on the new French government, the new European Commission and its priorities, newly appointed commissioners and portfolios, and the strategic agenda 2024 - 2029 from the German and French perspective. They also talked about the Franco-German relationship and its importance it had in the past, but will also have in the future in Europe. France and Germany, as key players within the EU, bear a special responsibility in shaping this agenda. Their efforts are crucial to fostering prosperity, enhancing competitiveness, and transitioning the EU into a green and digital economy. In France, the European elections have already triggered major domestic political repercussions. President Emmanuel Macron’s call for snap elections has set the stage for a new government. Meanwhile, in Germany, with federal elections looming in autumn 2025, the rise of extremist parties from both the right and left has weakened the government’s position. In the following Q&A session, participants were also mostly interested in the new European Commission, particularly the new and changed portfolios compared to the last Commission. #francogerman #eu #neweuropeancommission

Europe’s future in geopolitics relies on the quality of its partnerships, especially on the African continent. One of the EU’s major new instruments to join forces with partners through investment in the Global South is the EU Global Gateway Initiative, which sends a new geostrategic message: it seeks to provide an alternative to China’s Belt-and-Road Initiative. As we speak, the European Commission is setting itself up to set priorities for new term, 2025-2029. The impact assessment and policy recommen-dations presented in this study intend to help make Global Gateway more geopol-itically powerful. This study provides strategic suggestions on the implementation of the EU Global Gateway and its challenges and prospects for long-term success, incorporating Chinese and African perceptions of its performance so far. A big thank you to the authors Denis Foretia, MD.MPH.MBA, Dr. Jean Cedric Kouam, @Robert Nantchouang, Claus Soong, Abigaël VASSELIER and Gunnar Wiegand. Edited by Nele Fabian. Last week we had the great pleasure to discuss the future of EU-UK economic collaboration with Michael Kauch, Wera Hobhouse MP, Brian Mathew MP, David Chadwick MP, Sir Graham Watson and Jeremy Purvis at the Liberal Democrats Autumn Conference 2024 in Brighton. With 72 elected Liberal Democrats in the British Parliament, the window of opportunity for intensified collaboration between the EU and UK has never been so dynamic since Brexit. It has been a pleasure to look ahead together and continue our UK-EU Liberal Dialogue format on exciting new terms. We wish the @Lib Dems a successful start into the new term!
