On November 6, representatives from the veterinary community, including Ann Criel (UEVP/FECAVA), Vanessa Chala (FECAVA), and Nancy De Briyne (FVE), met with Member of the European Parliament Veronika Vrecionová. Ms. Vrecionová, Chair of the AGRI Committee and lead rapporteur on the EU proposal regarding cat and dog welfare, discussed the upcoming legislative process. While the Council has already established its position on the proposal, the European Parliament has yet to begin formal discussions. During the meeting, FECAVA and FVE presented key points from their joint position paper(https://buff.ly/4aiuEg0), outlining recommendations and considerations. Ms. Vrecionová anticipates that the first technical meeting will take place in December or January, marking the start of Parliament’s review of the proposal.

  • Yesterday’s #HU24EU event on Vaccination as a Preventive Tool for Transboundary Animal Diseases was a fantastic opportunity to spotlight the veterinary perspective on vaccination! FVE President Siegfried Moder shared invaluable insights. Key takeaways: Vaccines are essential in the veterinary toolbox for both livestock and companion animals. We must re-evaluate eradication strategies to limit mass culling of animals. Vaccines should always be prescribed by veterinarians and tailored to the animal/disease/situation Boosting research is critical—especially for vaccines against emerging diseases and new serotypes, like vector-borne diseases. Ensuring fair and widespread vaccine distribution across EU countries is a priority. And the much-hoped for vaccine against ASF—intensive research is ongoing, but it remains a challenging goal. #OneHealth

  • Europe is witnessing a pivotal moment with the European commissioners' hearings. AGRI Commissioner-designate Christopher Hansen made a strong impression in his recent hearing, focusing heavily on economic resilience, sustainability, and funding for agriculture, while veterinary and animal health topics received minimal attention. Key Takeaways from Hansen’s Hearing: 1. Strengthening the CAP Budget Hansen made a case for expanding the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) budget to support family-run farms, attract younger farmers, and boost rural economies. With farmers’ incomes at only 64% of the EU average, he emphasized fair pay and urged private and public investment—including resources from the European Investment Bank and Just Transition Fund—to modernize and innovate the sector. 2. Climate Resilience and Sustainability Climate change and sustainability were at the forefront. Hansen proposed carbon storage solutions and hinted at a possible Emissions Trading System (ETS) for agriculture, though he noted challenges with similar models abroad. He committed to helping farmers reduce pesticide use, support sustainable practices, and fight climate impacts head-on. 3. Reducing Bureaucratic Burdens With EU farmers often frustrated by complex regulations, Hansen pledged to simplify policies. He emphasized the need for stable, transparent policies to allow farmers to focus on productive work instead of red tape. 4. Navigating Trade Pressures Hansen defended the Mercosur trade deal for its benefits to EU exports, while promising to ensure that environmental standards apply equally to imported goods. He emphasized fair, sustainable trade to protect EU farmers. 5. Youth and Gender Representation With only 12% of EU farms managed by people under 40 and under 1/3 by women, Hansen highlighted the need for generational renewal and more support for female farmers. Structural barriers have limited women’s access to farming, and he committed to improving access for both demographics. In all, Hansen’s priorities spotlighted economic stability, resilience, and climate-conscious growth across the agri-food sector, with health and animal welfare largely absent from the agenda. As he looks toward a 100-day report on the future of agriculture, EU stakeholders are watching closely. Look forward to tonight's hearing where we'll hear from the Hungarian Commissioner-designate, Olivér Várhelyi, for health and animal welfare
