🇨🇿 Kasper Ernest’s Euro Tour in Prague: Reflecting on the Invisible Work of Wholesalers Kasper’s latest stop took him to Prague, where he sat down with members of #AVEL, led by Tomáš Votruba, to dive into an issue we often overlook: the invisibility of #wholesaling when everything works as it should. When #medicines #move and #patients have #access, no one notices the work behind the scenes—and that’s both a strength and a challenge. During the discussion, AVEL's President, Jan Rohrbacher, pointed out something critical: #wholesalers are losing money on their core operations and only making up for it through other ventures. It’s a stark reminder that, while we’ve adapted, the heart of what we do—ensuring medicines reach those who need them—can’t be taken for granted. The takeaway was clear: we need to refocus on what unites us as full-service wholesalers and use that shared strength to better communicate our value. When we stand together on what we do best, we can make sure our voice is heard 📣 Thank you to Alliance Healthcare Czech Republic, PHOENIX - lékárenský velkoobchod, s.r.o., and Viapharma for warm welcome and honest, thoughtful conversations. It’s these discussions that help us move forward ⏭️ Next stop for Kasper: Lisbon 🇵🇹 for #GIRPSCC2024. Stay tuned!
TODAY (DELAY) PRAGUE One of Europe's most beautiful capitals, but not fully delay-proof. We notice when things DON'T work as expected. Who knows what the function of the little car, almost disappearing in the midst of the monster machines that takes us into the air, is? Who is behind the wheel? Can the airport function without? Will I get home? We can expect most things to work on a daily basis. But as a society we shouldn't take it for granted. HOW TO COMMUNICATE THE INVISIBLE Today I met the members of #AVEL under the direction of Tomáš. We had an interesting conversation about being invisible when things work. When our members perform, the whole point is, that no one needs to know they exist. #Medicines #move. #Patients have #access. So how do make policy-makers understand that the #performance is under threat, while we still manage to keep things running? Stretching ourselves thinner and thinner. That won't go on forever. BACK TO BASICS I don't think we are in an existential crisis in the sector - but we are certainly struggling to "get up for air". As AVEL's President, Jan, pointed out, members are losing money on the core function of wholesaling, and only making up for the loss by finding other business areas. Members are #innovative like that. But it also means that the core function and clarity around what that is, may have slid a bit into the background. But what does that have to do with communication and being invisible? The starting point to be able to communicate about yourself, is knowing who you are and what you stand for. While our members have different structures, endeavoured into different business areas, offer different services - we are still all relying on our core competence of being full-line wholesalers. TAKE AWAY If we focus on what #unites us, we have a solid basis to communicate - and thus for becoming visible. Thank you Jan, Jan and Petr for the frank discussion about what #unites us, rather than what #divides us. Your companies, Alliance Healthcare Czech Republic, PHOENIX - lékárenský velkoobchod, s.r.o and ViaPharma Hurtownia Farmaceutyczna are in good hands. And again - the wish list is duly noted. And thank you for the more colourful wishes we could put forward to decision-makers. #AlwaysAimHigh

🏠 A conversation close to home 🇧🇪 GIRP DG Kasper Ernest Ernest, recently met with Belgian members NVGV-ANGR, right here in Brussels. The focus of their discussion was clear: the crucial role #healthcare #distribution plays is often undervalued, and this lack of recognition has significant #financial consequences. Standing our ground and making sure #society recognizes the value of #wholesale distribution is critical. From financial losses to unrecognized work, our sector continues to operate under immense #pressure. It’s time to change that narrative and demonstrate the importance of #wholesale in the #supplychain 🛠️ Together, they explored how to shift this narrative and ensure that decision makers and society understand the real impact of a #WorldWithoutWholesale. It’s a challenge, but one GIRP - and its members - is committed to addressing. A big thank you to Olivier Delaere, Philippe Lacroix, Céline Driessen, Comeos, Febelco, CERP Belgique, Pharma Belgium-Belmedis, Koen Van Genechten and #ADCnv for the honest and important discussion 💬 Let’s continue to work together to create a level playing field and shape a future where the vital role of healthcare distribution is fully recognized and valued 💪🤝
STOP AT HOME No flight pictures today, as I visited our Belgian members NVGV-ANGR a few minutes from my own home. We often say #home is one of the things worth #fighting for. So quite funny that it was exactly a few minutes from home, I met a fighting spirit from my members! STANDING YOUR GROUND Again today the discussion centered around the fact, that our sector is making #financial #loss on a big part of their business operations, because the value of the work they do is not recognized by society. So how do we change that? The thoughts varied. We talked about ways other parts of the #SupplyChain have used different tools to make their voices heard. Some more #activist than others. TAKE-AWAY Whatever the tool we will use, we must make policy-makers and society realize what the #WorldWithoutWholesale (WWW) would look like. Even if we will take some punches for it 🤜 Thank you Olivier and Philippe for hammering home this point. And, yes, I know #WorldWithoutWholesale makes no one tremble or even twitch their nose - but that’s our exact problem. Live it one week, and you would have a seriously different view on it - I have no doubt. What do you think is the best way to make this clear? Thank you Céline and Comeos for hosting us. And to Febelco, CERP Belgique, Pharma Belgium-Belmedis and #ADCnv / Koen Van Genechten for the great discussion. P.S. not forgetting the #LevelPlayingField

GIRP’s Euro Tour Continues: Next Stop – Estonia! 🇪🇪 Our journey through Europe’s #healthcare systems took us to beautiful Estonia, where Kasper Ernest, GIRP Director General, met with key leaders in the #pharmaceutical #supplychain: Mari Krass, CEO of Magnum AS, and Teet Torgo, CEO of the Estonian Association of Pharmaceutical Wholesalers #EHRL As we continue our Euro tour, one theme stands out: the need for better #knowledge sharing across Member States. 🌍 Europe’s diverse healthcare #systems are a strength, but only if we avoid repeating the same mistakes and focus on learning from each other. GIRP is committed to helping healthcare #distributors navigate this complexity, ensuring that decision-makers have the insights they need to deliver for #patients. 💡 A big thank you to our Estonian colleagues for the inspiring discussions! Stay tuned for more updates as GIRP continues its 🇪🇺 tour, connecting with healthcare leaders across Europe 🚀
ESTONIAN LEARNINGS Today I visited one of Europe's smallest but certainly most beautiful and efficient Member States. A combination I particularly appreciate. On my late flight back to Brussels I noticed the red lights blinking like a warning sign over Europe. So is Europe in danger? Well, the European #healthcare sector certainly is challenged - but I remain optimistic we will find solutions. However, it did lead me to reflect on my discussions with Mari Krass, CEO of Magnum AS, and Teet Torgo, CEO of the Estonian Association of Pharmaceutical Wholesalers today. REPEATING MISTAKES Many are aware that healthcare systems vary significantly from country to country. In #Europe we celebrate our #diversity - and we should! However, we are not so affluent in accepting the fact, that this also lead to a lack of learning from each other. Rather, we tend to repeat mistakes already made in other Member States. Or worse, we think we are learning from other Member States, and try to implement their solutions 1:1, but in a fundamentally different #national #ecosystem. The #complexity of the variability of the systems makes comparable analysis very difficult. This leads to significant #misinvestment in our healthcare systems and does not allow to utilise common strengths to compete internationally. So what's my point? KNOWELDGE SHARING European bodies representing business must have the necessary #knowledge to help policy-makers navigate this complexity by translating it to a comparable and practical guidance, if European healthcare systems are to continue to deliver for #patients. To many mis-investments in health are done because we do not get the learnings right. That is concerning. KEY TAKE-AWAY GIRP, being at the centre of the #pharmaceutical #supplychain must meet this challenge moving forward. Thank you Mari for putting examples on the table to hammer home this point! - And, Teet, for a very detailed list of wishes to the future of GIRP. Great to feel the #enthusiasm. We will get there! N.B. - THE NEW BLACK? Besides the above, we also had a more ideological talk in the car back to the airport. It is becoming more proliferated that somehow State-capitalism (the State running companies to increase competition) is a possible way to avoid the red alert in the healthcare systems. What do you think?
