Today was a true milestone moment for the Global Battery Alliance as #Germany #Serbia and #Zambia declare their intent to join as government members of the GBA at the Hamburg Sustainability Conference In his opening remarks to the conference in the presence of the Heads of the International Monetary Fund, The World Bank, UNDP and the Heads of State of Namibia, Mauritania, Barbados, Rwanda and many more, Federal Chancellor #OlafScholz said the GBA was the ‘world’s most important partnership to scale sustainable, responsible value chains for batteries’ Handing over their declarations of intent to GBA Executive Director Inga Petersen were none other than His Excellency the President of Serbia A. Vucic, German Federal Minister Svenja Schulze and Permanent Secretary C. Hichikumba of Zambia. Since starting as a conversation around a coffee table at the World Economic Forum almost ten years ago, the GBA has grown to become the world’s largest multi-stakeholder partnership in the energy storage space. Sincere thanks to the teams at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, the panelists including Simon Njovu, Thorsten Pinkepank and Moderator Greg Radford as well as the full team and members of the Global Battery Alliance for taking our partnership to the next level! Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) press release available here: https://lnkd.in/eBgWWJ9e Gim Neo Dr. Martin Brudermüller Benedikt Sobotka Atle Høie Jon Creyts @Robin Zeng

📢 The GBA invites Indigenous Peoples’ organisations to online consultations on 23 & 24 October 2024 on the draft Battery Passport Indigenous Peoples’ Rights rulebook. Please RSVP and share with your networks: https://lnkd.in/d3DPvp2X 💡 Over the last years, the Global Battery Alliance has been developing the #BatteryPassport as a global tool toward #transparent, #responsible, #circular and #just battery value chains. Among critical priorities is to address the impacts of mineral and battery production on Indigenous Peoples and their lands, as the battery industry scales worldwide. 📝 The draft rulebook on respect for Indigenous Peoples’ rights, developed by the GBA's multi-stakeholder working group, outlines performance expectations for companies to engage with indigenous communities in line with principles of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (#FPIC) in their efforts to manage impacts responsibly and to create socio-economic opportunities. ✏ The draft rulebook cannot be meaningful without input from Indigenous Peoples, their international partner organisations and standard-setting bodies that reflect Indigenous Peoples’ rights in their frameworks. The GBA solicits feedback from these organisations during and after the consultations, until 15 November. More information, including in Spanish and French 👇

Last week, the GBA had the privilege to participate in the #IndigenousSummit on #JustTransition in Geneva. As governments and companies push for a low-carbon future, it is important to uphold Indigenous Peoples’ rights, including the right to self-determination and Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC). At this event, over 100 Indigenous representatives met to redefine the “Green Economy” from Indigenous perspectives, ensuring that priorities, cultures, and lands are respected. Marking yesterday’s #IndigenousPeoplesDay, the GBA wishes to ensure that #batteries as a pathway to a low-carbon future incorporate these principles. We look forward to continuing the dialogue during the consultation sessions on the Battery Passport draft rulebook on Indigenous Peoples’ rights on 23 and 24 October. Event Recap: October 10th – From Conflict Prevention to Access to Remedy: Ensuring Effective Implementation of Corporate Human Rights Due Diligence in Mineral Supply Chains IPIS - International Peace Information Service The recent conference shed light on the increasing importance of human rights due diligence within mineral supply chains, especially as the global demand for minerals rises with the energy transition. Ensuring ethical sourcing and addressing potential human rights risks are essential steps toward a more sustainable and responsible future. Key themes included: - The significance of community remediation when human rights violations occur, emphasizing the need for independent grievance mechanisms that build trust and ensure accountability. - The challenge of maintaining community trust when unresolved grievances lead to social tension, highlighting the need for open communication and continuous dialogue between companies and local stakeholders. - The importance of corporate responsibility in regions where governance is fragile, with a focus on ensuring that supply chains contribute to long-term social and economic development, in addition to environmental goals. The Global Battery Alliance (GBA) is at the forefront of addressing these issues, advocating for sustainable and transparent supply chains in the battery industry. GBA’s work aims to ensure that the minerals driving the energy transition are sourced responsibly, with respect for human rights and fair labor practices, particularly in regions vulnerable to conflict. With growing expectations for companies to deliver both social and environmental value, GBA is committed to leading efforts that ensure responsible corporate practices are embedded across the supply chain. #HumanRights #Sustainability #GlobalBatteryAlliance #SupplyChain #EnergyTransition #DueDiligence
