🇨🇳 Our CEO Ben Backwell opened China Wind Power 2024 in #Beijing today. ➡️ With over 1,000 conference exhibitors and over 110,000 expected visitors, #CWP24 is one of the biggest energy events in the world. 🔦 In his remarks, Backwell highlighted the progress being made by the wind industry, with the global industry reaching 1TW of installed capacity last year and China’s industry celebrating 500GW of installations today. 📌 However he pointed out that reports from International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the COP Troika and the Global Renewables Alliance (GRA), and the International Energy Agency (IEA) respectively, show that the wind sector is far from being on track for Net Zero. Wind installations need to grow to around 350GW in the coming years to get on track. 📈 “It’s vital that the wind industry plays its role in scaling up to reach Net Zero, or these aims could slip out of reach,” said Backwell. "Reaching our aims will require unprecedented levels of collaboration and cooperation, and this requires grown-up conversations on trade, industrial policy, and supply chain diversity and social equity. 📌 Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) is working hard to to achieve the scaling up of wind energy that we require, building a platform to ensure dialogue collaboration between investors, industry and governments.

🔔 Here's Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC)'s comment on the International Energy Agency (IEA)'s World Energy Outlook 2024. 📣 Ben Backwell, CEO, GWEC said: “The IEA’s World Energy Outlook 2024 sets out clearly the dawn of the ‘Age of Electricity’ - and clean electricity will be the foundation of it. “However, the IEA also finds the current reality is that power sector emissions continue to rise - something untenable if we are to meet Net Zero. The wind industry is forecast to deliver record growth through the rest of the decade; with wind already providing the biggest share of variable renewable power. But it is not fast enough to meet the 3xRenewables target or keep the world on course for 1.5°C. The wind industry is ready to rise to the challenge - the world needs 350 GW of installed wind capacity each year through to 2035 to stay on track for Net Zero. The updated NDC process gives governments the opportunity to address this critical moment and set the direction of travel – they must deliver ambitious, specific and actionable plans that enable transformative action. Governments around the world are arriving at a critical moment - decisions made now will have an enormous impact on the energy transition and climate change. Major economies are enacting policies and driving investment into renewable energy, but emerging and developing economies are being left out of the benefits of the energy transition. This must be a global effort backed by unprecedented international collaboration, to course-correct the current path. The choice is obvious - renewable energy is clean, resilient, drives development and increases energy access.”
